pesto with mayonnaise?

I was watching an episode of The Barefoot Contessa, and she was making a beach picnic. Everything looked great until she added mayonnaise to her pesto sauce. Is it just me or does that sound really gross? I've made pesto many times and never with mayo.

i actually had pesto mayo on a sandwich this weekend (fresh mozzarella with tomato and basil) and it was awesome.  it was more mayo with pesto than pesto with mayo if you know what i mean, but it was delicious.

I make sandwiches with mayo on one slice of bread and pesto on the other, i love it!

I also like mayo combined w/ chipotle or wasabi.

It does sounds strange, but Pesto Mayo is also a really common sandwich spread at the delis around here.  I can't even taste the mayo, but it isn't as heavy as straight pesto.

Well, I don't get the point of mixing pesto with mayo.  Pesto already has olive oil in it, so why go putting in the mayo?  I don't see how it could improve it.  Seems to me it would be wiser to save on calories and fat by skipping the mayo, but to each their own...

to be honest, mayo in general has always kind of grossed me out.  so whenever anyone adds it to something i usually like, i have a reflex "ew!" reaction.  but then when it's actually mixed in so i can't taste the mayo part, i'm fine w/ it. like mayo in tuna salad i can handle (not too much though).  so yeah, to me pesto and mayo sound gross together. but then when i had a sandwich with it in there, it was surprisingly good.  the sandwich was actually from starbucks--the turkey pesto cranberry one.  i agree w/ drew though, from a health perspective, it can't be good for you.  like i think that starbucks sandwich was more than 500 calories!

Yeah, my first reaction was "oh please lord god NO..." (this is not something food writers are usually going to condone) but hey, pretty much anything with a lot of fat will taste good. You know that cheesy broccoli dish with ritz crackers that people go nuts for on Thanksgiving - 1 1/2 sleeves ritz, 1 POUND velveeta and 1 1/2 sticks butter... CRAZY, but I ate half a pan once (over two and a half days. then I threw it out while I could still fit into my jeans). So probably this is good too. I wouldn't eat it too much though - it can't be good for you (like everyone already said).
