For the past few months I've been looking for a job in a new city without much luck. I've applied to many jobs via monster.com but have not heard a single thing back. Its been a while since I've looked for a new job (been with my current company almost 6 years). Any tips for applying for jobs through monster? I'd really like to follow up with some of these companies but it doesn't seem like that is possible when you aren't given a phone number or any other contact info for the recruiters. Any tips that can be provided would be appreciated. Thanks!
I don't have any specific advice for monster, but I think you might have better luck applying through the company website. IMO, this or the actual recruiting companies for a corporation are better sources for placement. If you work with the recruiting company to place you, they will "shop you out" to jobs that meet your qualifications and if you work with a good search company, they have very reputable contacts.
make a list of every contact name you know that has a tie to the city you want to live in or just a contact list of anyone you know that could help you get a job.
go back to your career placement center from college
alumni list from High School, College or Grad School
Read some books at Barnes and nobles about finding a job
there are lots of other websites besides Monsters for jobs
Use a recruiter
Read the paper for leads, names, etc.
Make a list of the fields, companies you want to work for and then do some research to find the appropriate person to contact there---(you can find out a ton through Google for instance, if you want to work at WHole Foods in Austin, google Whole Foods, Austin, HR manager or Marketing Director) Then email them directly.
IF you do find a job on a website, google as described above to try to contact the HR or hiring manager to contact directly (call or email_--i do it all the time) Write a script out so you don't ramble on the phone and get to the point.
DOn't give up---it takes awhile and don't settle!!
gOOD LUCK

Thanks for the advice. I look into some of the suggestions you provided mikacat. I was trying to avoid the recruiter posts on monster but maybe I'll give that a try also.
I feel like I'm submitting my resume into a big black abyss and its so hard to make any human contact with someone in the company to follow up.
