Are they worth it? I'm thinking of putting my credit card reward points towards one. I think they look darn cool and I do bake alot, but I just mix by hand.
Convince me that I "need" one.
Also, can you use them to whip cream? Knead dough?
yes yes yes! I love my kitchen aid. I seriously use it for everything. You can whip cream, knead dough, make cookies in like 3 minutes flat, make dips, etc. And with my grinder attachment I use it to make my own ground chicken which is sooooo good and way cheaper than buying it preground (plus, I see exactly what goes in it- including how much fat)
I enjoyed using them in cooking classes. I'm planning on getting one after my kitchen remodel since I think my ovens temperature is innacurate. It's so much better using them for making bread since kneading with hands is terrible, plus I would like to try homemade pasta.
Yes, I think they are very worth it for what I use it for. I bake alot and there is no comparison to the cakes that I can make mixing with a hand mixer and what I get from my Kitchenaid. The Kitchenaid incorporates more air and you get a nicer, fluffier, and more tender crumb to the cake. I also do a german dish, very similar to Russian Piroghe Sp? called Beerocks. It has a potato dough that is wrapped around a beef and cabbage filling, and the dough used to take me so long to mix up before I got the mixer. I could not live without mine at this point.
Thanks for the responses everyone! I've been researching all week, it turns out if I use my points I have to use the equivalent of $350. worth of them. The mixers only retail for $270 so i'm going to just buy one. After reading your posts I definitely "need" one, I didn't realize how versatile they were.
Amazon has some for $210, but only certain colors and the color seems to change everyday. Today at Wal-Mart they had the 4.5 quart marked down for just $130, but it only came in white and the bowl on the 4.5 qt doesn't have a handle.
Anyhoo, I really want the 5 qt so i'm going to stalk Amazon until I see the color I want on sale and then go for it!

Yes, love them. I have a white one my mom gave me for my b-day. I think I need a new one in one of their brights. They are great. You can do a lot with them! You can buy new attachments to do more stuff like make pasta, make sausage..whatever.
