Fafsa's and Fin.Aid
Permalink Closed

Okay...so the first attempt at college consisted of the registrar sending a bill and me writing a check....so, I need someone to walk me through this whole Fafsa/financial aid thing.  I'll be heading back in the fall.

I filled out the Fafsa and received an EFC of 102.  What on earth does this mean?  Now that the Fafsa is in and processed, what should my next step be?  What questions should I be asking, or where should I be looking for student loans?

So stressed!!!!

Contact you schools financial aid office and make sure that they received a copy of your fafsa. They should be able to help you find government loans that your qualify for (stafford and whatnot) or can recommend you to one of their preferred lenders (like my school really likes citibank and wachovia) for student loans.

If all possible try to see if you  qualify for pell grants these do not have to be paid back. They go by your income I used these when I was in school.

the efc stands for estimated financial contribution, or what they expect you to contribute out of pocket for your education.  when they give you the financial aid package they will point you in the right direction, and probably let you know about pell grants. don't start looking for loans until after you get your aid package. a) you might not need them. and b) most schools have lending partners that they work so the process will be a lot easier. also there are a lot of scams out there, so i would be hesistant to submit my financial info. to someone unless i knew they were reputable.
