Hey friends, if you went on a plan and started washing your hair every other day, it would eventually be less oily. Because you wash your hair every day, it does get gross when you don't wash it but if you started washing it every other day, it wouldn't. The dirty hair project many of us did is proof of that. I have very fine and thin hair but it's to the point now where I really can wash every other day and it still looks okay. hth
I really think this is true. I have fine, thin hair that gets oily at the roots. My stylist recommended washing only every other day because my hair gets so damaged, and it actually is less oily now. But since it's fine, I usually put it up or back on the 2nd day, because it tends to not hold curl or volume, etc. when it isn't freshly washed.

Well, I did this four years ago when we moved here. My stylist recommended washing every other day, and I did that. Then I went out after work and one of the guys asked if I'd just gotten out of the shower. I said no, and he said, "Oh. Because your hair looks wet.". NOT the look I'm going for. :(

I wash mine every day, unless I wake up late for a final or something :)
My hair gets a little gross, but mostly it just looks AWFUL if I don't blow-dry it from wet. I was reading (who knows which magazine, I got about 4 this month!) and they were talking about how you could go 4 days without washing it, and were showing how to fix it every day, etc. That prompted me to ask this same question of my friends - most of them are every day or every other day, but one was talking about her friend who only needs to wash it once a week because her hair is so coarse, curly, and dry...I was kind of suprised to hear of the differences! I guess since I wash mine every day, I figured everyone else did too haha

every other day- every now and then i'll wait until the third day. i used to think that i had to shampoo every single day, but most hair really will get used to it if you start washing every other day.

This is exactly what happens to me. I have thick, course, curly hair that I often straighten. I can't even wash it at night because by the time I get up in the morning it has the dirty hair smell that drives me crazy. I just can't do it.
every other day - my hair actually does better on day 2 - i've gotten to where i try to plan to wash today if I know i've got somewhere to go tomorrow.
I must say this thread is fascinating!

Yep, I agree. I started the dirty hair project way back when too. Prior to that I washed my hair every, single day and I thought it looked disgusting if I didn't wash it every day. Now I wash it maybe twice a week. (Sometimes a tad more if I work out a lot and sometimes only once a week if I don't work out that much or at all.)
With the help of less product and baby powder, my hair looks way better the days after I wash it than the day I do.
Basically, for me, I was getting my hair highlighted every other month and it was getting damaged. Plus, I wanted the color to last longer. Now I'm dealing with trying to make my hair as healthy as possible (no color, more frequent cuts, less product, etc.) and that means washing it as little as possible.
So, no. I don't think it's gross to not wash you hair. My stylist only washes hers once a week and it looks awesome!
Every day. I just love how soft and clean it feels to wash it every day. It's probably just psychological, but I feel icky if I just shower and don't wash the hair too.
Another plus for me since I have mild allergies, washing hair every day helps keep you from breathing in outdoor allergens.

I probably could go 4-5 days, but I usually wash every other day because on the third day it gets harder to style, not because it looks dirty at all. I have very little oil in my hair as it is, and washing it every day just makes it so dry. I think my hair feels best the day after I wash it, but the color is best on the day I wash it. MAYBE it would get oily after a 6 days or so, but not significantly enough that someone would think my hair looked dirty. Every once in a while, I'll skip a wash and just use conditioner.
Same here. My hair actually looks its best on the second day. I usually wash it once every three days and I can sometimes go longer without any difference to my hair. It's thick and dry and washing it every day would make it really, really yucky.
What exactly is the dirty hair project??? Is it just skipping a day of washing or what?
Awhile back, I think it might have even been in fashionhag days, a bunch of us tried not washing our hair as often to see if it would work out. We kept updates, gave tips, etc. It was my foray into not washing everyday.
