do you ever... not really do work, or pretend to do work while you're at work?  i'm sure the answer is yes, but I just need some re-assurance.  I'm used to working the whole entire 8 hours, but I really feel like not doing anything- I just feel really guilty about it.

i think everyone has days like this (well okay, maybe not everyone, but there are a lot of slackers out there).  i used to feel guilty about it all the time, but then i reminded myself that i usually finished stuff i needed to get done quicker than anyone expected me to (since the work was all menial stuff) and then i was being more efficient, right?

if all else fails, just watch Office Space..."I'd say I do about 15 minutes of actual work every week."  That always makes me feel better!

Me too. Except I don't feel as guilty because I'm hardly getting paid anything.

But TECHNICALLY I am always working. As a recetptionist/admin, my main purpose is to handle the phones, the admin stuff is secondary. So really they can't complain too much, because ST keeps me at my desk answering the phone.

I work straight thru (with the exception of lunch) for 9+ hours a day. I have to; I'm too busy to not do work. I don't access any 'fun' sites at work, only those necessary for my job. Once in a while, I'll get up and talk to a co-worker for a few minutes or take a lap around the office, but that's the extent of my not working at work.

However, at my old job, I barely worked at all, except for all of the busy-work they had me doing. I was constantly surfing the net and reading magazines.

Most of the month, I hardly do any real work at all. Basically that's because that's all I need to do. It sucks really. I'd love to be really busy but it's just not necessary at my current job.

When I first started my current job, I got a so-so review. I was also doing the most work then. By my 2nd review, I'd started slacking off a little bit. I got a better than so-so review. Now I hardly do anything and my last review was glowing.

Here's the way I look at it. In my profession, people spend a lot of time doing unnecessary things. I choose not to do those things and only spend my time doing the things that actually matter. It turns out those are very few and far between.

So do I feel guilty? Nope. But do I worry I might get in trouble for spending so much time online, for example? Yep. Oh well. Worst part is that I do the least work but I have the most stats of anyone at my agency. Nice, huh? (Stats are how we measure job performance.)

Ah, Office Space. How I love thee.

All that said, I'd LOVE to have a job where I spent more hours of my day actually working instead of being bored for 40 hours a week.

i do this all the time.  some days i'm swamped, and they are pretty rare.  on those days i feel very productive.  i love the feeling of productivity, but my current job (admin. asst.) doesn't really require it.

When I had a job , I worked for about 2 hours of my 8 hour day.  I did what work there was to be done and then some, but because I'm a maximum-efficiency kinda gal, the actual work just didn't take very long.  I figure as long as the work is done, who cares?  How can it be a bad thing that I finished it in 2 hours instead of 8?

My dream job would be one where I was paid salary and could leave as soon as all the actual work was done.  Heaven!

Some days I work the full 8 hours, some days I don't. My job is pretty much 100% creative, so it's hard for me to do creative stuff when I'm not feeling inspired at all. On the days I do feel inspired I get a ton done and I have a lot of fun. I always meet my deadlines and I'm efficient, so I don't stress too much on the days when I do nothing. I do start to feel guilty if I've gone more than three days without doing a whole lot.
