I have read several posts on here some way or another involving cupcake shops. I think mainly in NYC? This is just really bizarre to me lol. We don't have those around here. You can buy already made cupcakes in the grocery store but not that many people do that I've seen- most people just make their own. Anyway so how many people have a cupcake shop in their area and what area are you in?

I *think* there is only one in my area (Wash DC). This guy gave up his job as a lawyer to make cakes and cupcakes and opened a shop and cafe called Cake Love.
For some reason, he gets tons of press: he's been on Oprah, was one of People's 100 hottest bachelors and has a show on the Food Network. He must have good PR people because his cupcakes are just ok.
dot- i might be able to help you. i went to one in nyc and it was sooo hot outside, and i'm the kinda person who can't eat a ton of sugar (if i don't cut myself off with jelly beans i get a massive sugar rush headache). so we were outside and i think the cupcake, hot weather, and not enough water made me kinda sick. i seriously can't eat cupcakes (or i take off most of the icing) anymore.
so maybe just eat a couple in a row and you won't want them anymore.

It is a cupcake place/coffee shop. The cupcakes are so delicious. Part of the appeal is the atmosphere, it is a great place to hang out for a few hours and enjoy a cupcake and a cup of coffee while you people watch.
I don't really like to bake cupcakes because I'd eat them all in a couple hours. With the cupcake shop I can enjoy one really great cupcake from time to time.
We also have another place that seems to be more of a mall chain type cupcake place.
The best cupcakes I have ever had anywhere, ever (and yes, I've had some in NYC too) are from Starbucks. Don't believe me? Try one. But don't blame me when you keep going back and back again.
We have lot's of bakeries. I assumed that's what people were talking about when asking about cupcakes. I didn't realize that there are entire stores devoted to just this one item. I think that's kind of short sighted, but whatever I don't sell cupcakes so I wouldn't know.
In LA, our big gun is Sprinkles Cupcakes. People go crazy over these things.
I honestly prefer by a smidge the cupcakes from Joan's on Third, which is a great restaurant here, but Sprinkles is really yummy too. They do cupcakes for every holiday...right now they have a brown sugar praline one, a banana one with dark chocolate frosting and a pink bunny on top for Easter, plus a flourless chocolate one with a Star of David on it for Passover.
They're expanding in the next few years...according to their website, they're planning on building stores in lots of other cities.
The cupcakes at Starbucks are pretty good. Lately I've been having Hostess cupcakes, so good! Yesterday at break I was having one and of course somebody had to comment on my weight and me eating those all the time. I did want to use the bathroom but did not because they might think I go in there to throw it up!

Ugh that pisses me off. It's like "did I ask you what you thought about me eating one cupcake?" I worked at a convience store a long time ago and we did not get breaks or a lunch hour at all. They said we had plenty of "breaks" to eat inbetween customers. I usually worked a minimum 9 hour shift. You get hungry in that amount of time. I weighed 125 so it's not like I was even overweight (but if I had been it's still none of their business) It would never fail- as soon as I would take one bite of a burrito or even a cracker! some customer would come in and make a comment about how I should not be eating that blah blah. I got so pissed I really wanted to punch some of them out. Here I am starving and still having to stop between each bite so some customer could make a crack about whatever I was eating.

Mmmm, sprinkles - so tasty. I just stood in line there for 30 minutes on Saturday morning. The flourless chocolate "passover" (non-kosher but no flour) cupcakes were out of sight.
But, I have to say that Martino's tea cakes in Burbank are awesome - a little different than a cupcake, but they are very chic and square...and $.75 each :)
