so i just ran an 8K this weekend (my first race, now i'm addicted) and i thought my shoes were ok, eventhough i've been thinking about replacing them soon, but today i have a blister and soreness on my feet.
obvously, i need some running shoes and this time i have to go for comfort over looks. i have a wider foot.
does anyone have opinions on:
new balance
asics (i like some of their styles)
saucony
i know that i can't do nike. price is not a factor since my dad who's a running nut is HAPPILY paying for them.
Update: so i went to www.fleetfeet.com b&m store and tried on about 6 pairs. this i is what i learned...
i don't over-pronate
i have a wide foot that measures 7.5. i told her that i wear at 9, she said probably a wide 8, i said 9. i wear a 9 just like i said.
nike has a new wide foot version....surprisingly not horrible
saucony fit really well, asics did not.
i have a big arch.
years of wearing trail running shoes at running shoes messed me up because i felt all the shoes were too light and didn't have enough ankle support.
verdict....
men's mizuno's size 7.5 because they have a bigger arch...maybe all my years of wearing heels made my arch bigger, i don't know. here are the beauties (not so much beautiful).
i'm actually going to the new balance store in a bit because i want to see what they choose for me. i'm happy with these, but i'm not sure the lady was the best helper because my sister said when she went to the new balance store they first measured her foot width, then the arch. they didn't measure the arch at this store.

i love my saucony running shoes, they're very comfy and supportive. oh and i have a medium-width foot, i think by width size is B if that helps. let me know if you need me to look up the details for the exact shoe i have. oh and congrats on the race, what an awesome accomplishment!
I also can't wear nike's because they are too narrow for my foot. I have good luck with addidas and asics for workout shoes. I don't run too much so I can't really vouch on how they would hold up in races/training but I will say they are comfy and work for cardio.
Let me know what you find because I need a new pair of shoes since I just started jogging/running. I have 2 pairs of addidas and neither one fit properly for running.
I run quite a lot. My favorite are New Balances. They are great. I have a few pair of Saucony that I really like too.
I am a fan of both of these brands because I feel they put more effort into making them comfortable then stylish. I have always been happy w/ any price range. I have never really like w/ NIKE. It seems like you have to pay a lot more to get good quality NIKE shoes.
Since price is not an option go to a running store. We have a few local ones and all the people who work in there are the X country/ marathon running people and they really know what they are talking about.
Congrats on taking up running. I absolutley love it.

i was planning on going to a running store, but i wanted to do a bit of homework before i went. i used to be more of a runner then i got mono. so that stopped my running for a bit (ok, a couple of years), but i'm trying again. this time it's taking a LOT longer to get back into it. but i loved it once, so i'm hoping as time goes by i'll like it even more.
also, ladies, check out my experience with foot locker in toasts and roasts. i have NEVER had such bad customer service. they pissed me off enough to want to write reviews all over the place on their horrible customer service.

I think Asics aren't wide enough. I find them to be terribly constricting at the front of my feet.
I was just about to post the opposite. I have wide feet (especially the front half) and I just got my first pair of Asics. I went for a good 6 mile walk Sunday and I LOVE them! They are so comfy that when I got home and put on my regular, comfy ballet slippers, they felt like I was walking on wood blocks.
My problem has always been my toes. Nikes and some New Balances hurt my toesies when I run, or walk for a long period of time. The Asics have so much toe room that I haven't noticed one single pang, even when I squinched my feet up in them as far as they would go.
I went to Academy and tried on every. single. pair. of women's athletic shoes. The Asics were seriously the only ones that gave me zero pain anywhere. If only my party shoes were so comfy...
These are the ones I got (and so cute too, which really wasn't a motivating factor at all):
thanks blubirde. i know i said i wasn't going for looks, but i fell in love with these at the running expo.
they're the newest asics and i know i said style didn't matter, but i've heard these have good reviews and i like the look of them. so, i'm hoping these work but if they don't i'll look into some other asics, saucony, and new balance. i know that all of those brands have wider widths available, so i'm sure i'll be able to find something.
i really like the ones you posted too. we'll see what works out. thanks girls!

I owned these for about a month and loved the look but...these are the EXACT pair of Asics that I could barely walk in without screaming in pain. The thing is that the balls of my feet are their widest point, not the toes, so that may make the difference.
It just goes to prove that you really have to try things on and what works for one doesn't work for all.
ETA: I should note that I got a regular width in these since the SA at Frontrunners said they don't carry them in wide widths. Maybe that's the problem, since I always have to get wide shoes.
my asics definitely haven't been as durable as nike - honestly, they're the least durable I've ever had - but I like the styles better than anything else out there, so I'm putting off getting a new pair (I'm so vain it's just weird...)

i know what you mean, i think that's why i've been wearing trail running shoes even if they aren't the best for road running. i think asics have the best looking running shoes, i still can't help but try to take that into consideration, but ultimately i'll go for comfort.

i had a pair of saucony's that i loved. i bought them after going to a running store, and they seriously made such a difference. my main problem was that i would be in pain after i ran, specifically my tendons would hurt, but after i got the saucony's no problems. however they are HIDEOUS
though great if you over pronate.
i recently bought these b/c i needed new shoes, and succumbed to the desire to not have hideous ones. i haven't run in them yet so we'll see.
those last pair, the gray ones, were kinda "trendy" when i was in h.s. i still kinda like them, but i never got them cuz my dad and brother had them.

I've always found New Balance to be pretty wide and Asics to be fairly narrow. That's why I buy them exclusively. They are great running shoes, so if you can find a pair that is wide enough, I'd highly recommend them. That being said, I second the suggestion that you should go to a running store and have them fit you for the best shoe. It is really the best way to go as they will check to see if you pronate, etc. and find the BEST fit for you!
thanks everyone for posting. thanks ayo for the congrats. i knew i could do the race, but i guess i was just nervous since i would know so many people there and i knew that my dad was probably going to beat me (i have to keep on telling myself that he invests a lot more time into running and he's a marathon runner but still..). it was a LOT easier than i thought it would be and i'm looking forward to a couple more races. maybe even traveling for a couple of races. anyway, thanks again.
i'll be back in a couple hours with a new pair of shoes, i'll let you all know what i decided.

Did they have you walk and watch you? Did they wet your foot and have you step on brown paper? A really good fitting store will not only measure the length/width of your foot, but will watch you walk, do the brown paper thing and definitely check out your arch.
