Help! I've ruined my new cast iron skillet
Permalink Closed

I used it a couple weeks ago (okay, I don't cook that often). The boy washed it in the sink, not the dishwasher, dried it, and put it away. When I went to pull it out the other day it had rust all inside of it. Is it ruined forever? If not, how can I clean the rust out and how should I clean it in the future to prevent this from happening?

Nope, not ruined forever. You can scrub it with a scouring pad & get the rust out. If that doesn't work there's something you can do with it in the oven, I'll check online so I don't tell you wrong & further harm it.....

In the future when you wash it, before you put it up you need to "season" it - you coat it with oil & put it on the stove for a few minutes (with the burner on) or in a hot oven. It's kind of a pain, but worth it. And the more you use it, the blacker it will get & the less care it will take. It seems like that material soaks up the water so even drying it with a towel doesn't help with the water.

Here ya go!

I've done that too.  Before I knew how to take care of mine.  I saved every one by scouring and seasoning.  It'll be okay, Blubirde!

Yea! Thanks you guys! I'll see about getting rid of the rust this weekend. Hey, do you think olive oil will work in place of vegetable oil for seasoning and cleaning? It's all I have but I can buy some at the store if need be.

I would think olive oil would be fine. My thinking is that it's more for the slickness than anything else.

Ha.  I did that once to my mom's cast iron skillet when I was a teenager trying to help with the dishes.  I thought the skillet was so gross, I couldn't believe it when mom told me that it was supposed to be that way.
