Trader Joe's in NYC
Permalink Closed

I'm so psyched for this store to open.

My friend (CA displaced) from work RAVES about it -- how she gets TJ's care packages from her dad in CA, etc.

I'm going to check it out on Fri. during my lunch hour. I'm looking forward to getting some salsa, maybe some oven-ready pizza, etc.

Any other NYC girls excited about this, or am I the only dork?

Not a NYC girl (anymore) but I don't think you're a dork because if a TJ's was coming to my city it would make my YEAR!

You're not the only dork -- I'm excited too!  People are always raving about TJ's and I've been wishing we had one for a long time.  Their prices are supposed to be good, aren't they?

you guys are going to love it!  they have all kinds of healthy/organic and gourmet things, and everything is very well-priced.  the only things i don't recommend are the produce--i find that most of their produce is under-ripe and just not that great (except the avocados--those are great).

starstuff--the oven-ready pizzas are one of my faves!

Ooooh...Starstuff, you should pick up a salad or something for lunch there when you go!! Also, they sell Ben and Jerry's for the cheapest price...$2.50 a pint.

If TJs sold cabbage, I'd have no reason to step into a regular supermarket. TJ's is the best!!!! It's so reasonably priced and the quality of food is so high. I love that there's almost always samples...they give out (pretty good) free coffee in the morning. I would always tell people if I ever moved back to New York, the thing I would miss most about LA is Trader Joe's. Guess that won't be the case anymore.

Where is the NYC one going to be?

TJ's is going to be on 14th St., a couple blocks down (further east) from Whole Foods.

I think TJ's will do well b/c they have a great reputation, and also NYU is right in that area, so there are always tons of ppl around, as well as 14th St. being a nexus of subway stops.

I hope their prices are good -- I read that their 2-Buck-Chuck is only going to be $3 a bottle!

hey! that seems unfair.  i know NY is expensive, but it's called two buck chuck for a reason.

that said, i never buy it.  i don't care for it, even for $2.

i'm super excited, but i'd also be super surprised if they kept their low prices.

I love TJs!  I get so excited because they sell Kashi Go Lean Crunch for $2 less than my regular grocery store.  Their organic milk is also much cheaper then the grocery.  I love the cheeses, salsas, and Trader Joe's brand sausages.  Last night I made TJ's Pad Thai, which was really good considering it was Pad Thai from a box.

omg, i tried to shop there sat- complete madness!! a line that wrapped around the store so you couldn't even get to certain things, and so many people that it was like being in a crowded bar- and people kept flooding in.  I had a basket with avocados in it but got so frustrated after 10 mins that i dropped the basket and just left.  when i was trying to get out (had to go out the IN way because couldn't get to other exit)- about 30 people were flooding in and i had to wait a few mins to leave.  UGHHHH.

If any NYC girl wants to go to TJs we have several up here in Westchester... I will pick you up at the train and take you there. Avoid the crowds. Just PM me.

I'm so jealous!!!  I love TJs, but we don't have any here in NC.

I highly recommend their packaged gnocci and their dried blueberries are amazing.  They're great on cereal, oatmeal, ice cream, everything.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the Gnocchi a la Sorrentina!  We have it at least once a week.  It's surprisingly low in calories and fat too.  I'll have to try the dried blueberries the next time I go there.

i love their dried cranberries, i'll have to try the dried blueberries.  our trader joe's in chicago is ALWAYS crowded.  especially after work and it drives me nuts.  i can't imagine what it was like on sat.  i say go a weird time if you can or wait a couple of days to see if it slows down.  it's definitely worth it though.

Hi Everyone -- My co-worker and I went on Friday around lunch time. When we got there it was packed and the line to check out stretched around the store. We weren't sure we wanted to wait on the line, but I figured since we had about an hour for lunch, we could brave it. She and I went up and down each aisle and grabbed some stuff. Then we took turns standing on line while the other went to look for stuff more carefully.

I got the roasted veggie pizza, 2 types of quesidillas (sp?), tortilla chips and three types of salsa. The pizza and quesidillas were great -- the tortilla chips were ok and the salsas were yummy and not nearly as 'hot' as the lable indicated ( a + in my book).

The line moved quickly as each register was open, so we were out of there in under an hour.

I'll certainly go back, though I'll try to find a way to go there during the week, or maybe 'late' at night -- they're open til 10 p.m.

I checked it out last night (Tuesday) around 8pm.  The line to check out did stretch around the store but it was moving fast.  The store was so picked over!  They were runnning out of stock on a lot of things.  I'd never been to one so I enjoyed seeing the selection but decided I'll wait until the madness settles.  I've heard there is one close by in New Jersey so I may just drive over to it, I like that they had a lot prepared meals that look tastey, good alternative to my usual frozen snacks from Whole Foods.

i went on sunday night again and a lot of things were gone.  There was a huge truck FILLED with food that was being unpacked as we were leaving.   I wonder if food will always be sold out there, haha.  The guy said he had restocked TEN CASES of frozen mandarin orange chicken just that day.  Good for trader joe's- my friend said they'd been looking for a cheap location for a while because they didn't want to raise prices.  And yes, Ben and Jerry's was $2.50.  I couldn't believe it.
