I'm going to make this recipe for a pasta dish that I saw on Everyday Italian. It's from the episode of "Pastas Without Sauce" and it has sundried tomatoes and goat cheese in it. It calls for 2/3 cup of white wine. I've heard that you can't use a crappy white wine for cooking because it shows. However, I don't know what kind of white wine to use (I'm not very familiar with wine haha). Any suggestions? Or a substitute for wine that would work maybe?

don't use anything too sweet. Stay away from a zinfandel. I like to use Pinot Grigio in Italian dishes b/c its most like the house wines I had in Italy.

You could use chicken stock if you really had to.

Try either a riesling or pinot grigio.  Both are really good.

i agree with the Pinot Grigio rec.  basically you wouldn't want to use anything that you wouldn't enjoy drinking.  that said, i usually use the cheapest thing that i am willing to drink (unless it's for a special occasion...or if i already have the bottle open).  if you don't drink a lot of wine...i would just recommend choosing something in the $8-15 range, there are a lot of good wines to be had in that range.  i would probably avoid anything less than 7 bucks...except maybe Yellowtail (but they don't have a Pinot Grigio).

people at wine stores are usually pretty helpful, if there's one near you...sometimes even the grocery store will have a sort of designated wine staff member who could answer questions.

Hey Valenciana - I actually found yellow tail pinot grigio not too long ago at Kroger I think.  If you like yellow tail and pinot grigio keep looking.  You're bound to find it.

hmmm...good to know!  the Kroger near me has been remodeling their wine section, so maybe i've just missed it or they didn't have it in stock.  thanks!

riesling is very very sweet -

do you really put that in normal recipes where it calls for white wine?  i usually have some around the house (my fave!) but have never tried  that ...

Hermoine- I've never cooked with white wine yet.  Just red wine.  I go by the what I like to drink rule and reisling and pinot grigio are what I drink and what most people like so that is what is on my list.  I don't really find reisling much sweeter than pinot grigio that's why I never thought it might not work but that might just be my taste buds.
