jacL: gene was the guy who hung himself, so i don't really think he will have any parts this season :) i think tony will be fine too. phil leotardo as acting boss i though would cause some serious trouble. so far so good. that voiceover in the beginning; i had to watch it several times, but lots of symbolism there it thought.-- Edited by tara t at 14:01, 2006-03-13
Silly me, I was talking to my BF when I typed this. I meant to say I wondered if he was going to have a big role BEFORE he hung himself, but I got it all confused.
This show is soooo worth the extra $12/month I am now paying for HBO (anyone else order HBO just for the Sopranos?). I knew if I didn't, everyone would spoil it for me before it got to DVD, and I was right -- when I turned on the radio this morning, that was all they were talking about.
My thoughts:
-no way Tony's dead. He got shot in the stomach, which I think is a very slow-killing wound.
-I miss Adriana. Joey was SO not worth getting rid of this character.
-Chris-tuh-fuh is a tool.
-Carmela continues to be one of the most fascinating characters on the show. Edie Falco is amazing.
-I really hope they do something with Melfi, because the therapy sessions seem as pointless as usual.
-Janice

I love the Sopranos, and I definitely got back on the HBO train the day before the show. I really liked how the first 15 min. of the show was a "catch up" to show the viewers what's happened inbetween seasons (Janice has a baby, Carm and her dad are building the house, etc.). It's going to be great, especially now that Uncle Junior is totally off his rocker.
think so ? i really like carm, i just think of her as dependant. on everyone. but i do love edie.
See, I don't like Carmela at all, but Edie plays her so well. She is dependent, and it's fascinating to see that every attempt she's ever made at real independence (her real estate license, the divorce, the house-building) falls by the wayside because of her need for material possessions (provided by Tony). I see her as a very tragic character, and I think Edie helps her come off as being very multifaceted.
BTW, I think of Livia all the time. I couldn't stand her either, but every time I see my mom's two little dogs (who are 16 and 17, and blind and deaf), I think of Livia's line, "Ohhh, why won't the Lord just take me?"

I really think Adriana will came back. They never actually showed her dead. I think whathisname (I only think of him as Little Steven) took pity, told her it was a warning, and helped her to vanish. I think maybe the show people left the door open, knowing Joey would suck. I hope - I love Drea de Mateo (though not enough to suffer through Joey).
Total shock with Tony at the end. How good is James Gandolphini (sp.?)? He and Chris-ta-fuh are really fantastic actors, like their characters or not. But he will definitely be ok, as I have read about different stufff happening this season. Apparently there will be an asian theme, which started with Tony/Carmela's obsession with the japanese place this ep (how cute was that?). I think he becomes interested in eastern philosophies or something, I kid you not. Sure that will be discussed with Dr. Melfi.
Uncle Junior was sort all childlike and scared when he went running off after shooting Tony. It was touching and sad, somehow. It pissed me off, but it was also tragic.
That Meadow looks great after her (the actress's) whole eating disorder thing.
The suicide - man. It was so realistic. Apparently, from what I have read, we're gonig to see a lot of that sort of realism this season, like closeups of gun violence, etc. Yuck, but I like that the show doesn't wince at that kind of thing. Not to be gross, I just think the show is uncompromising, and it does deal in violence.

i have two spoilers if anyone wants them i will pm you. i don't want to blow it for anyone. i was totaly shocked when tony got shot. i couldn't believe it.
i don't think i like meadow all skinny like that. she looked better with a little meat on her bones. i would hate to see her jump on the sickly skinny band wagon. i don't like her boyfriend fiance either. he's a p**sy. he makes me so mad. but that is all from last season.
i can see tony starting to compensate his relationship with carmela with material objects again. just a little bit, but when he went to that sushi place without her and she was upset so he asked her how she was liking the car right after. and when he bought her the car in the first place after he didn't talk to the building inspector for her. it makes me sad, because i love them as a couple and i hated it when he treated her like crap.
