I think I'm pretty good with Word & Excel but I'm at a loss. I'm on a Mac & have office for mac so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. With my new job I have 2 forms that I work on all the time, one in Word & one in Excel. I have to highlight certain areas with color. I tried putting the shading button on my toolbar but I'm still having issues.

Excel problem: It seems that there is no "shading" button for the toolbar, only a "pattern" button - it looks like it is the one I need but when I hit it the cell has yellow dots, not solid yellow. I've tried several different ways with that button but it always defaults back to yellow dots.

Word problem: My word form has a chart on it. My boss wants 5 fields highlighted, but he only wants me to highlight the TEXT, not the whole cell - I guess he's trying to save on colored toner. When I do it from the shading button on the toolbar it will highlight the whole area, not just the text. So I have to go in & do "format: borders & shading, pick the color, and select apply to text - kind of a pain 5 times per every single registration form! Is there a way to do this from the toolbar or am I cursed forever?

It's so irritating because my DH can support, fix, maintain the whole system of a Fortune 15 company but can't help me with my toolbar!

ETA: I swear you guys, I'm not that dense - after re-reading this I sound like a ditz. But I can't figure it out some maybe i am

in Word, do you have the "highlight" button on your toolbar?  or is that what you mean when you say the shading button.  i've circled it in this picture -



as you can see from my lovely arrows, that's what i used to highlight the stuff in the upper left cell.  it highlighted only the text, even though i added spaces and stuff around the text.


okay...i just reread that you figured out to go format > borders & shading > apply to > text so just disregard that part of my picture (i'm too lazy to go back and re-edit and re-upload to photobucket)...


i used to be pretty good with excel, but i don't actually have it on my home computer and i have to see the screen and the buttons to be able to advise...but i do find the Microsoft Office online help to be fairly useful.  here's a link to where i searched on "highlight" - http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/results.aspx?Scope=FX%2CHA%2CHP%2CQZ%2CRC%2CXT&Query=highlight

OMG - girl, you are my HERO! That completely worked. I can't believe I didn't consult such a site, but seriously I was so aggrivated with it I probably would have never figured it out. Thank you SO much.

yay!  glad i could help...computers can be insanely frustrating sometimes!  and i didn't even know there was such a site until about a year ago...they even have templates you can download and all kinds of fun stuff...


p.s.  on a completely different topic...i hope you girls are up for some Galactica discussion after Friday's ep!!  i haven't been reading any of the posts since i didn't want to spoil for myself, but we've finally almost caught up (only two eps behind) and are officially *obsessed* (me more than DH i think!).  i need some more nerds to chat about it with!  fashionable s unite!

Oh, I can't wait! I have no idea where you are but I can honestly say you just won't believe it! I missed out on the discussion last week because I was out of town so I'm ready. I'm so sad it's almost over.....fashionable nerds unite!!!!!!!
