ikea bed question
Permalink Closed

this may be a needle in a haystack type of question, but does anyone have the ikea "morkedal" bed (or another similar bed from ikea)? doesn't "morkedal" sound like a harry potter character?

i really like the look of it, but i am wondering if it can be used with a mattress and box spring, or if there just wouldn't be room.  i already have a mattress and box spring set that i really like.  the description says that it has "adjustable sides" to accommodate different thicknesses of mattress, but does that mean that it could accommodate a box spring, too?

that's a cute bed. it looks to me like underneath their mattress, there is a box spring..it almost looks like i see a line across halfway down the right side, where possibly the frame is to support the mattress/box spring? i could be hallucinating, though.

yeah, i see the line you are talking about.  the pic is deceiving, because it looks like the blue thing is some kind of mattress, but it's just the comforter.  so i think they've only got a mattress in there underneath the blue.  but the "adjustable sides" intrigue me....

hmm. i see what you mean. the way the comforter goes up and down makes me think they put their futon mattress on top of another one still. but could be just a fluffy comforter. do you have an ikea near you to check it out? or i bet their cs could tell you if it could fit both....

A lot of those modern beds don't require a box spring.  If you like the look of this bed but want to have a box spring, I would just get bed frame and make the headboard and bedskirt to look the same.  It would be rather simple to do.

you are right, cortney.  i've seen some directions for making those upholstered headboards before--i was just thinking that the price is so low on the ikea one, i could avoid the hassle of actually making it myself, since the materials alone would probably cost me about the same as the whole bed from ikea.  and then there'd be no chance that i'd make a mess of the project.

I had a bed from Ikea (though not that one) and it had a series of slats below the mattress instead of the box spring. It was very comfortable. It fit a full size mattress, too.

I have the MALM bed from IKEA and we did not buy a box spring.  When we got home we realized we had to buy the railings that hold the mattress up seperately.  So we went back to buy the railings since we didn't have a box spring to hold up the mattress up.  We figured they sold them seperately just in case the buyer had a box spring they wouldnt need the railings  Have you seen the bed IRL?  Maybe the bed is the same as ours and could work both ways.
