This is really troubling and I feel as though those supporting the ban really don't realize what will happen. Do they think that these girls and women who want abortions are just going to sit there and go through a healthy pregnancy because there's no more legal abortions? NO, too many of them are going to either kill, deform and maim their fetuses with abuse of drugs and alcohol (which could actually work against them, and give them a deformed child instead), or they will resort to back alley procedures if they are desperate. Sure, some mothers will follow the law and maybe keep the baby or choose adoption, but trust me, there are way too many young girls out there who will do something terrible. This is why I feel that legal and medical abortion is a neccessary evil.

keeping it legal, keeps it safe. easy as pie. by making something legal, it brings in liscencing, regulation, checks on safety. it actually really hurts my stomach to think of these states banning abortion and what might happen to the united states if this would go federal at some point. seriously, i am frightened for our country and our women. taking away a woman's right to her own reproduction puts us back three thousand billion years. it sends a message to women that they are only there for procreation and children and yes, that's nice and all, but we are people first and foremost, not mothers.

i hear you lorelei. not to mention all the children who will be born healthy, but to very young, maybe very troubled mothers with no money or parenting skills, who don't want the children in the first place. what kind of environment is that to grow up in? i hope they are staffing up the children's protection services in these states, as sad as that is to say. it sounds like a petri dish for lots of new abuse and neglect cases.

This is absolutely horrifying to me. I just don't even know what to say about it. I absolutely agree that if this goes to a federal level, that nothing good will come of it. It's outrageous that the government is trying to tell women what they can and can't do as far as reproduction. What is wrong with this country????

At the end of the day, if the Supreme Court takes away the right to choose, wealthy women will go to Canada to get abortions, and poor women will die or be seriously injured trying to do it themselves or getting it done by unlicensed "doctors." I agree that abortion is a necessary evil.

The thing about this administration that really angers me is that they want to end abortion, but they do nothing to promote the use of birth control in teens or adults. In fact, they seem actively against it for teenagers. Abstinence only education does not work; it's a farce. Kids learn more about sex from their friends, movies, and the internet than they do in school. For some very religious teenagers, abstinence only education might work. But, for the majority of teens, it does not. If they want to have sex, they will have sex. They have sex in high school bathrooms! Short of packing them off to a same-sex boarding school, parents can't do too much about it. And college? Sex is rampant in college. Thankfully, a lot of colleges are smart about it and make condoms available for free and the pill easily obtainable.

If I had a teenager, I wouldn't want him/her to have sex before they were physically and emotionally prepared for it. But I understand reality. I would rather they use protection than have unsafe sex. If abortions are illegal, schools need to teach about birth control and it needs to be made available. I think that adults who don't want/can't afford more children should be encouraged to use it, too. It's beyond stupid to outlaw abortion *and* discourage birth control. I'll get off my soapbox now.

there's one of these in the works here in Georgia too

oh yeah, and the bill is currently written so that anyone involved in an abortion could potentially be charged with murder, the mother included...

This is SO disturbing. I am usually not a politically active person - what can we do? Anything?

Which of course, they should be doing anyway, for the greater good....I am one of those annoying optimists that think if there were better CPS resources available for young or impoverished parents that we might see a decrease in abortions anyway.

I haven't really made up my mind on the whole abortion issue (I don't personally agree with abortion but I'm not sure if the government should get involved) but why are all these states making these bans within the same time frame? I don't get it. One bans it, so all the other states jump on the boat? Seems fishy.

if you are really interested in doing something, i suggest with checking out NARAL to start. at the very least they will have form letters for you to print and sign to send to your state government. they will also have info about getting involved in other ways.

basically i think they are hoping to rouse up some litigation and eventually get at least one case to the Supreme Court and then have Roe v. Wade overturned. i think the two new justices have given anti-abortion activists a boost of confidence. so anyway, technically these state-level laws are illegal, but they're just trying to stir up some lawsuits.
