Getting rid of old furniture

I just bought a new couch, chair and ottoman but now my question is how do I get rid of the old stuff?  I can't just stick it out on the curb for the trash collectors because they won't take it, and it is not in good enough condition to consign it.  I would like to just donate it but I don't have a truck to get it over to Goodwill.  Do any charities pick up old furniture?  Any other ideas as to what to do with this stuff???

some charities willl pick it up. You might also want to try craigslist or freecycle. Also, most cities have bulk trash collection a few times a year.

I listed my old couch in my local paper for "free".It shouldn't cost you anything.I had calls non stop.


Salvation Army and Goodwill gave me a song and a dance- I told them to shove it- I;m not the one who needs the couch.Si I figure whoever wanted it for "free" probably really needed it.

Agreed.  Multiple phone calls may be annoying but it would probably be less of a hassle than dealing with picky Goodwill.  Everybody benefits, your helping somebody out who needs furniture.

I've had no problems with Goodwill picking stuff up.. Had a random floral couch leftover from 'em college days and they didn't question me or anything. Just came right over and picked it up.

I've called the Salvation Army several times to come get my stuff and they were great! Halleybirds suggestion of craiglist is good too.

The free ad works great.   You can also pass the word and there are usually alot of college kids who would love decent furniture and would be more than willing to take it off your hands.

I'd go with the free ad or even few well placed  flyers. 


You could drop one of at a YMCA center or if you know of a low income housing community...


Speaking from my own experience, you might want to post your give-a-ways on a single mother resource site.  I've seen a good deal of ads like that.
