When you find something cute in a magazine, are you usually able to find it in the store or online? I always find cute things in magazines and then I go to the store and they're not there! And then I go home and check online and they're not there either. Is this just me?

I was just thinking about this. I found a dress that I LOVE in this month's Glamour. It says to find it at intermixonline.com...(It's the Bela Tunic dress) so I go there (very excited because I WANT this dress)...and it's not there. :( And I can't find it anywhere! I'm beginning to think that the Glamour editors just made it all up. It really doesn't exist.

Sorry...rant rant rant.

You know what? I'll look for something and 75% of the time not be able to find it anywhere. Six months later, I'll find said item on sale at the back of a pile in some tiny boutique and then I'll realize that I saw it before in Lucky!

Things I want I never find.  They are so cruel.

I know! I'll see some cute shoes, or a dress, I'll go to the store, and IT'S NO WHERE TO BE FOUND, rather disappointing.

The only store I don't have this problem in is BR, everywhere else either I can't find it or it's already sold out.

I think magazines run them earlier then stores/online actually has the items. Then by the time I get around to remembering I wanted it, it's already gone.

my thought is that sometimes...

there will be only a handful made and all the "insiders" will scoop them up before we can get to them or before they sell out.

i saw this a couple times at bcbg.  if there was an item that was selling fast, or that someone thought wouldn't be around after four weeks when we could use our discount, they would pay full price for it so they could get it before it sells out.

yep.  i swear i was super sleuth on an item ( i don't even remember what the hell it was ) and after weeks of searching, i found out it was made just for the magazine.  why on earth would a magazine advertize something we can't get ?

Definitely. And I agree with shopgirl's assessment.  I also think that sometimes, because magazines are produced months in advance, that companies send samples of things that they plan on producing and sometimes they end up not producing them.

One instance I can recall where this was the case was a pair of Nine West pink boots that were featured in Lucky.  Nine West actually decided to pull the plug on the production of those boots, but they had already been printed in the magazine.

Pulling the plug on something you feature in a magazine is a bad idea!  What is better advertisement than something millions of people will see?  Whatever the item, there will be plenty of people who like it and will go to great lengths to purchase it.  If your brand becomes known for changing their minds, people will no longer waste time hunting for items featured in magazines which will equal less sales.

I agree, but it happens.  I'm sure there are good reasons (unforeseen manufacturing issues, etc) for it occuring and I'm sure it doesn't occur that frequently.

Another issue may be that the items are produced in extremely limited numbers and only sent to a few locations.

It's like the bait and switch used in car advertisements...isn't that illegal to advertise something and not carry it?  I guess it technically isn't being advertised by the actual store though.
