Do you have clothing that just hangs in your closet?

I am feeling a bit disgusted with myself about those clothes I buy, that never see the light of day. Most of them are online purchases, and strangely 75% are from Victoria Secret. They look so good on the models, but dont end up looking so good on me. I rarely return stuff I dont like, and I think that is where the problem really exists. Two items in particular are:

This jacket I bought in pink. It fits really well- but the corsage flower always turns me off and I feel silly wearing it. It is not something that can be detached. I did wear it once and got a compliment on it- but this was not enough for me to ever wear it again. I bought this about a year and a half ago- paid 148.00- and have worn it once! Thats pathetic!

Not this top exactly- but identical in shape. It is solid peach and I bought it last spring- for 68.00- never wore it. Why did I buy it? Why didnt I return it? Dont know. Some other items I have bought from them that I end up not wearing: a couple silk blend sweaters that I hate the feel of on, and a couple pair of jeans\and pants that dont fit me quite right. I also have several items from Express, Ny and Co, and Old Navy that I have bought That I never wore. I have since banned myself from these stores because I dont end up liking or wearing anything I buy from them, or they dont wash\ hold up well. Can anyone else identify or am I alone in this problem?

Take the jacket to the tailor and see if he can take the corsage flower off. It is not an integral part of the jacket so it should be possible to detach it.

I regularly cull my closet, but still have things in there that I never wear. Those are usually things I consider the most beautiful, unique, and "me". I just don't have the guts to wear them. Examples:

  • a black Betsey Johnson coat with black embroidery and ribbons. It has a big faux-fur collar. It makes me look like a movie star and I've only worn it twice (once to the opera, once when my mom came from overseas).

  • An amazing cropped vintage brocade jacket, blue-green with subtle yellow/gold piping. Fits like a dream. Wore it once to a reception.

  • A wolf fur vest. I love it, but don't dare wear it where I live.  I don't feel bad about owning this fur: it's vintage and inherited. Wore it once or twice when I traveled.

You get the idea.

I have SEVERAL things I never wear but will never get rid off because they make me happy and I admire them, kinda like art.

This Catherine Malandrino silk top. It's ridiculously small in the bust... painful, actually. But I think it's so beautiful that I just admire it. Maybe I'll be nice and pass it one to one of my sisters.

Bcbg wrap dress. I got it at Off Fifth and have never worn it. I like the bright color but I'm worried it's too loud.

Mandrin Collar dress. I think this is so classic and sexy (there are high slits on the side), but I haven't gotten the nerve to wear it.

This VS top. I thought it was sexy in a 1950s bombshell kinda way. I've never been brave enough to wear it.

Burberry trench I inherited from my mom. I like it, and I think the print is classic, but I'm scared about looking like a walking logo.

Rampage blazer. I like it in concept but am worried it may be too cutesy.

I have a few things...(will post pics later)

Dresses. I am a 34D with a small waist and large hips/butt so it's usually a bitch to find a good dress. Therefore I buy when I do find them and set them aside. I just need occasions to wear them!

Betsey Johnson (I'd do late afternoon wedding in the city/night out in this...maybe wear under something so it functions like a skirt during the day but I haven't gotten that figured out yet.)

Cigana (I have no occasion in mind to wear it, though if I was an art gallery opening type of gal I'd probably wear it...but it sure is gorgeous.)

My vintage ivory tweed/fur trim collar coat (that should be in fur storage and not my closet, but I digress...it needs a good cleaning first!). It just doesn't get cold enough.

My Sigerson flats: I keep taking them to Arturo's Shoe Fixx in Beverly Hills so they cam fix them but it never quite works out. The strap is too long and the heel has worn down so quickly. It's shame that I've had sucha  bad experience with these shoes.

I think it might be something inherent in a woman's DNA to hold on to pieces that she doesn't wear.  I'm guilty of it too.

Like you, Lilyann, I definitely notice there are certain brands of clothes that just come into my closet and never see the light of day.  The Limited is one of those brands.  I've pretty much just stopped buying clothes from there because I know I'll never wear them.  Express is kinda the same way for me too--they have cute tops, but I never wear them.  And their pants just don't work for me at all, so I hardly ever go in there at all anymore.

All in all though, I think I'm pretty good with my purchases.  I don't do a whole lot of impulse shopping anymore, so that's helped a TON!

I have the same issue with these stores! As much as the item looks cute and fits great in the store, it never ends up looking good when I actually wear it. Or I'll realize it looks cheap or it loses its shape. I have also banned these stores. I'd rather just spend more money and get a lot of wear out the clothes.

I have TONS of things in my closet that I don't wear. The ratio of things I don't wear to things I do wear is about 5:1. I reallllly need to clean out my closet. The stupid crappy clothes take up so much room so my nice clothes get wrinkled. I just went on a major shopping trip last night and I won't even allow myself to put the clothing in the closet until I clean it out.

Also, a lot of times I will buy things that are cute, but not really "me".  I just won't feel comfortable in it and will avoid wearing it. I kept myself from buying anything like that last night. Now that I've identified that problem and the problem of buying stuff at places like Express and Old Navy, I feel like I can shop smarter.

Bought a pair of vintage cowboy boots but then felt too cowgirl-ish wearing them and figured I just wasn't cool enough to keep up with the trend so it's been sittin' in my closet.

But I do like lookin' at them tho

OMG, Renee!

The coat and the jacket sound awesome (I should look at the vest, I can't quite picture it).

Why wouldn't you wear them on a everyday basis? Like with jeans on the week-end, with pants to work, and so on. I think they'd add a feeling of luxury to your everyday life, making you feel really  like a diva, worth of attention. Don't be afraid to turn heads! Life is too short to be afraid of such things!

i know exactly what you mean... i go through these outrageous closet stormage, looking to get rid of things so that i could make room for new things... it disgusts me knowing that some of these things that i want to get rid of have never been worn, and really, i don't want to wear them ever, and then there arre those precious pieces, where your just hoping and wishing you had an occasion to wear them for... it's saddening to see all those articles of chlothing that have never seen the light of day... my goal for this year, is to try a new outfit, or layering, putting pieces together so that they won't be completely useless!

I have a lot of stuff in my closet that I love, but my lifestyle has changed a lot since I stopped working and went back to grad school. It's unfortunate because I just don't have enough places to wear everything. And, full disclosure: I still sometimes buy items that are dressy (especially shoes) and they just don't work when I'm hiking up the hill to class. Like sfc, I'm starting to think of my shoes as decorations for my closet instead- some people collect art, I collect shoes. Maybe I should put them in shawdowboxes and hang them on the wall?!

Yes, I also have the" shoes that are decorations for my closet". I take them out occasionally and try them with an outfit, mainly just to put them on my feet and  admire them- then I put them back in the box and tell myself I need to find an outfit that will work for them- to build one around them.

Yes...because sometimes I'm actually braver and have more self-confidence in my head than outside the fitting room.

Perfect timing with this posting!  I have this problem multiplied by almost 90% of what is in my closet!

So for the past two months I have not allowed myself to do laundry...which has forced me to wear things I usually pass over.
