This is on the front page of the NYTimes and it is utterly shocking and appalling. Everyone knows Hamas are a bunch of homicidal maniacs but they were elected by a clear majority and that is that. This is exactly the kind of bullshit that gives Palestinians a legitimate reason to hate us. Not to mention it's hypocritical to the point of obscenity to even think of doing this, after all Bush's sales pitches about Iraqi democracy.
I'm seriously sickened right now.
U.S. and Israelis Are Said to Talk of Hamas Ouster
JERUSALEM, Feb. 14 — The United States and Israel are discussing ways to destabilize the Palestinian government so that newly elected Hamas officials will fail and elections will be called again, according to Israeli officials and Western diplomats.
The intention is to starve the Palestinian Authority of money and international connections to the point where, some months from now, its president, Mahmoud Abbas, is compelled to call a new election. The hope is that Palestinians will be so unhappy with life under Hamas that they will return to office a reformed and chastened Fatah movement.
The officials also argue that a close look at the election results shows that Hamas won a smaller mandate than previously understood.
The officials and diplomats, who said this approach was being discussed at the highest levels of the State Department and the Israeli government, spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly on the issue.
Today, Israeli and American officials said there was no "plan" or "plot" to destabilize a Hamas government.
An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman, Mark Regev, was quoted by The Associated Press as saying "there was no such plan," and a State Department spokesman, Sean McCormack, told reporters in Washington that "there is no U.S.-Israeli plan, project, plot, conspiracy to destabilize a — or undermine a future Palestinian government." He said that the United States continues to work with Mr. Abbas and the existing caretaker government.
Scott McClellan, the White House press secretary, said "there is no plot, there is no plan."
But in the outline provided earlier by the officials and diplomats who said that the approach was under discussion, Hamas would be given a choice: recognize Israel's right to exist, forswear violence and accept previous Palestinian-Israeli agreements — as called for by the United Nations and the West — or face isolation and collapse.
Opinion polls show that Hamas's promise to better the lives of the Palestinian people was the main reason it won. But the United States and Israel say Palestinian life will only get harder if Hamas does not meet those three demands. They say Hamas plans to build up its militias and increase violence and must be starved out of power.

bullshit. am i really supposed to believe that the laddies in dark suits down in cia headquarters are just gonna twiddle thier thumbs while Hamas runs Palestine? you can bet your sweet bippy that there are 12 different plans on how to take down this government and one of them is through stragetic military force if need be.

I'm not surprised at all. I knew as soon as the election results were announced that our insanely hypocritical government would start plotting ways to take out the Palestinian government and replace it with one that suited OUR needs and wants. I don't support the policies of Hamas, but international observers affirm that this was a legal election, and Hamas won by a clear majority.
Oh come on, you guys. Let's take this in stride. Suuurree it was a "supposedly" legit election and sure it was a bit of a democratic process but puh-leeze. Grow a brain, will ya? If we can't get our guy in there by installing a puppet democractic process, we'll just work around that. I mean stupid Middle Eastern people don't know what's best for them and they certainly can't see the "big picture," right? I mean, they don't understand that Israel is controlling their electricity, water, and sewage systems for their own good, not at all for anything, ahem, unsavory. So in light of doing what is best for the country (and incidentally, it also helps us, but it's completely incidentally), we'll go in and take out that nasty, mean government that was duly elected by its people so we can have the right person in charge. See? See how all that works out better?
Okay, on a serious note, it sucks that Hamas was elected because I truly think a more moderate leader would be better for any Middle East country, not just Palestine, but I expect no more from our government than to have plans on how to oust them. It's just the way we work. And it sucks waaay more than Palestinians electing Hamas.
This kind of crap makes me more and more apprehensive for the future. Why doesn't our government realize that when we meddle like this, we just breed more hatred in future generations who want to come and get us back, and the whole horrible cycle keeps spinning and spinning?
let's not forget that this week bush asked congress for $75 million to help bring democracy to iran, a sovereign nation that has never directly or indirectly threathened the u.s.
Right after the election, I heard an interesting interview with a former ambassador (It may have been on the Al Fraken show but I really can't remember. I know it was on Air America). Basically the ambassador said that it was actually Bush's fault that Hamas ended up in power. The former Palestinian leader (sorry, I can't remember the guy's name right now and I don't have time to research) had asked that the election be suspended because they all knew that this would happen. And guess who told them that they couldn't get an extention, that they had to have the election as scheduled? Yeah, George Bush. He said that holding the election as planned was required for proper democracy. And now this? How f'n hypocritical and contradictory can you get?
God, how did this man end up in power? It makes me want to cry. I'm on my way out to do some baby shopping with the MIL, but if I get a chance I'll try to find some more info about this when I get home. I know I was kind of vague.
