Always meet in a public place. Take separate cars. Tell a couple of friends where you'll be, and have one call you at an agreed upon time so you can have an excuse to leave if needed. Always impose a time-limit on your first, even second, date (for example, go for coffee, but tell yourself you won't stay for longer than an hour...and stick to it!!!)

yes, meet in a public place. this is so different than the way you typically meet a guy, which is often either through someone or some place with a degree of familiarity to you both.

another thing, I don't have personal experience with online dating, but a friend who does says that SO FAR, the majority of the men she met seemed to expect to "hook up" quick, so you might want to suggest that it be made very clear in her profile that casual sex ain't happening, just to weed out those types.

i agree with the advice so far...tell your roommate to be careful.

but it can be done, and successfully. a friend of mine just TODAY got engaged to the man that she met online somewhere. i don't know if she used a service or what, though. but he's a good guy and they've been dating for a couple years now so it is possible.
