I'm so annoyed. I owe a ridiculous amount ($2500).

So, make me feel better. Taxes are good for something, right?

$2500? I feel for you. I guess they must be good for something...

My parents claim me, so I'm getting crap back ($293). They used to claim my sister and her son, but they can't this year because she's not a student anymore. My dad said that they're costing my parents a crazy amount (he said $40,000 but I think he was just teasing) not to claim them this year. She's making out like a bandit, though... she's getting $5200 back. She could use it more than me, of course, so I'm happy for her... but it just doesn't seem fair.

I hate taxes

I think you get the Screwed By The IRS crown, Poptart!

Stephanie - it could be worse.  The last year my parents claimed me, I had to pay $400 while they got their child tax credit and $2,000 back.

I haven't sent ours to be done yet.  I have a feeling it's either going to be very bad or very good.

I had a deal with my parents when we were in that "iffy" place - they gave me what I would get back if they didn't claim me - otherwise screw them. Of course I lived on my own & paid my own college too.....so they didn't really have a choice....

I am with elle - i haven't done ours yet & really it's lazy plus fear - either it will be cool or awful - i guess i need to figure it out!

After several years of paying and paying (once over $7,000!) we have a new accountant and now we don't pay the Feds and generally owe the state of NJ around $250.

It sucks.

A few years ago, I owed $1000 to the IRS.  It doesn't sound like a lot, but I was only working part time! I had to beg, steal, and borrow to come up with the money (okay, maybe I didn't steal anything). I switched my filing status to single 0 so now they take what seems like 50% of my income and I get $1000 back.  Yes, I get money back, but it's nothing compared to what I pay.

I loathe taxes.  Especially with our current administration's woeful inability to oh, I don't know... run the country in a responsible manner.  I read in the paper today about widespread abuse of Katrina aid.  Of the 2.5 million people that got aid, 900,000 people got it by using duplicate or *fake* social security numbers!  Things purchased with Katrina aid include:  $400/night beach condo rental, massages, apparently lots of stuff at "Condoms To Go", expensive dinners, etc.  All by people committing fraud and not affected by the hurricane at all.  And this stuff was all bought with our tax dollars.  So I'm a little angry that this year Hubby and I will probably have to cough up around $1000.    I could do much better things with that $1000 than flush it down the toilet of federal taxes.

poptart, I can think of only one good thing that tax dollars do:  they pay my salary, since I'm a federal employee.

Okay, done ranting now.

BAH! My W-2 says I got paid $2k more than I should have last year (which makes no sense, because my paychecks are exactly the same). I can't report it, b/c I don't want them to make me pay.

If they hadn't messed up my income, we'd get about $3k back, which would have paid for our washer and dryer, and our new dresser, plus given us some $$ to go on a spring trip. But we're only getting $600 back, which means the rest is coming out of savings. No vacations for me for awhile!
