Students--- classes poll

Students... what classes are you taking this semester? High school, college, grad school... whatever. As I will be staying up super late, I wondered if anyone's schedule is half as boring as mine.

Organization of Business Enterprises... boring but it's really useful because there's not exam but we just are given scenarios and have to draft LLP, Corporation and LLC operating agreements... along with business plans and other related things.

Law and Higher Education... I have zero interest in this but the professor's good and it fit in my schedule.

Employee Benefits... SEXY as it sounds. But I want to do employment law so it's beneficial.

Sales, Leases and Licenses. Yuck but should be helpful on the Bar.

Interviewing, Counseling, and Negotiating. A somewhat easy skill class that I never do the reading for.

Hey, I think your classes sound interesting compared to mine! I'm getting a Master's in Information and Library Science, and have a full load this semester.

I'm taking:
Children's and Young Adult Services: learning how to address children's and young adults needs in the library, how to be an advocate for their rights, encourage them to love reading and become life-long readers, how to ensure equal treatment for kids
Knowledge Organization: how information is found when people look for it, setting up databases and citations
Information Technologies: basic website creation, current events in information technology
Information Services and Resources: similar to the last two in that it's focused on databases, information retrieval

They're all core courses except for the Children's/YA one, so I have to take them. They're not too bad, actually, but I haven't really gotten into the swing of things yet this semester.

Mine are pretty boring also:

Financial Accounting & Reporting

Principles of Micro Econ

Intro to Sociology

People & Cultures

(I'm trying to double major in econ & sociology and minor in business. There are way too many pre-reqs. so it makes me sad.)

Mass Comm classes:
Writing for the Mass Media - same professor I had last semester in Intro to Print Journalism. We're studying grammar right now.

Presentations for Media - we do 5 projects during the semester and have already done 3! We write news scripts (and record), record and write a Public service Announcement or interview and the third was a news cast we had groups for and had to record.

Journalism (my minor)
Practicum in our campus newspaper. I was hired as the Assistant Lifestyles Editor which pays very little but I like it.

General studies:
Econ 123: The instructor is easy but the material is difficult for me to grasp. I'm trying though

Academic Foundations Math (building class leading up to 101) This is my second time taking the course Math is not one of my strengths but I have to pass it this time. We had our first test today.

Here's my rundown:

States and local governments - from the neck up, professor looks like a Fox News anchor. Fomr the neck down, she wears leather miniskirts. She also has FIVE shot glasses lined up on a shelf in her office and photos of a seriously hot husband and son. SERIOUSLY hot. I like this girl.

Adminstrative law - professor wears black or COLOR-DYED jeans (does he have to special order them, because I have never seen these sold in stores) with a matching turtleneck under a buttondown every day. Uses few words under four syllables. Complains about all the textbooks and hornbooks (optional books which actually explain the law, unlike the textbooks, it's a lawschool thing) being subpar and made us use a six-year-old version of an updated textbook that everyone had to special order and some people didn't get until the third week of class.

Poverty law - professor is awesome and funny and even though she has frizzy hair and wears, I suspect, her son's clothes some days I totally her. Seriously love the woman. somehow managed to make TANF interesting, for which she totally deserves some kind of medal.

Gender and the Law - professor looks like a sweet little housewife, and spent the first class discussing the difference between calling someone a dick and calling him an ass, and why there's no female equivalent to "balls." her too.

Environmental law clinic - professor is awesome, despite his completely misplaced trust in my legal abilities. Sample quote: "This environmental agency would like us to find legal solutions to the problem of zebra mussels clogging the great lakes. Can you get back to me by the weekend?" Seriously, I'm pretty sure that somewhere a lawyer has noticed the problem and searched for a solution. I'm not quite sure what me and my three semesters of law school can add to the discussion...

Complex Litigation - basically an advanced civil procedure class...class actions, multi-jurisdictional proceedings, joinder, etc. THE PROF IS AWESOME!!!

Administrative Law - BORING! The professor wears these tight black shirts everyday...and they are borderline belly shirts...they hit right at his waistline! It is so frustrating and he says "um" all the time. My friend counted "ums" the other day...she quit at 72!!

Intellectual Property - very interesting...can't wait to get into the trademark cases and talk about counterfeit fashion!!

Mental Disability Law - this is an online course...kind of fun, we watch DVDs of lectures and then have a class chat once a week.

Government Externship - this ones a substitute for an Arbitration class that isn't being offered this semester so that I can complete my certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution. I am working at the Oklahoma Corporation Commission - I really like it!

I realize that some of this must sound really boring to many of you!

Hee - law school fashion is so scary! Last year, I had a prof that wore his pants hiked up ABOVE the bellybutton - and then he spent most of class putting his hand down the back of his pants and sort of waving and twiddling his fingers under the fabric - it was incredibly distracting. I loved him, but I just wanted to say "Honey, hands stay out of your pants in public" everytime he started to do that, like he was a toddler or something...

I'm such a nerd, I love this poll!

  • Anthropological Approaches to the Study of Religion - This is a really cool class. So far we've talked about how we define religion and what purpose it serves in society and why people create religions.
  • Religion and American Visual Culture - As a Poli Sci major I kind of thought this class was a waste of time at first. However I just got to write a really sweet paper about Johnny Cash's Hurt video and the religious imagery in it.
  • Environmental Diplomacy - I'm bored out of my mind 80% of the time in this class. I'm not really interested in regimes and how governments interact, more how people interact with their gov.
  • Poverty and Democracy - Very theory based, which I have a hard time getting my mind around and the classroom has basically turned into a battleground between the white kids and the black kids.

Eww, not liking too many of my classes.  Yall's sound so interesting in comparison.

Physics-  I don't have a physics mind and my teacher is so monotone and boring.  PowerPoints everyday and his breath smells so bad I can smell it from my seat 3 rows back.

Spanish- Pretty fun class, nice teacher.

English Literature- Great teacher, crappy grade.

US Government- Somewhat interesting and great teacher, but pretty darn hard.

Macroeconomics- BORING and my teacher knows nothing.  He is an idiot (nice guy, but a moron).  Direct quote: "Consumers do what they do based on what they do."

World Religions- Pretty interesting, good teacher.

Statistics- Interesting in the abstract, extremely yawn inducing with my teacher.  I can't keep my eyes open to save my life.

Journalism- My fav. class.

Building Regulations: This is, to my surprise, not nearly as boring as it sounds. The prof is lively and great and really enjoys dispensing real-world advice and horror stories. There are a few professors, of whom this guy is one, who take it as their personal responsibility to shake the dewy design student innocence out of us by telling us how things work in the real world and by warning us that we will never make any money as interior designers and that we will wind up changing careers or getting burned out.

Methods & Materials of Construction II: What it sounds like. All about building structures and load-bearing mechanisms and how stuff gets built. Same prof as building regs.

AutoCAD II: More advanced class on the drafting software that we use.

3dStudioMax: 3-d computer modeling class. I dread the work I am going to have to put in to get good at this.

Writing for Business: HILARIOUS. An entire class about business memos and "dear sir or madam" letters. But at least the prof seems cool so that will make it less boring.

Design Studio VI: Studio is our main design class, which everything else we take supports. Our first project this semester is a four-story NYC brownstone (townhouse). It's our first residential project in two years so it will be nice to get to play with  residential furniture and all the pretty fabric again. (Fabric for commercial spaces must be highly durable and meet fire-resistance standards so it's not the most beautiful stuff in the world.)

Small group communication

I took this class at my school and I loved it. We were in a group for the whole semester and we had to pretend to be in the business world.

As for me, I am finishing up my undergrad. Since I am finished with all of my classes of my majors I am now working on my second minor in sociology. I am taking

1) Soc. of aging and dying- It is not as depressing as it sounds. it is actually very intresting.

2) Soc. of Peace and Justice- This is basically about how we can solve the world's problems without war. We get off topic a lot. It is a okay class, what is cool about it, is that it is totally based on discussion

3) Poverty and Society- I love this class. It again is based on discussion, but it opened my eyes so much. We also talk a lot about sex slaves and why so many people migrate to the U.S.

4) Soc. of Sport- I was just trying to fill up my schedule, plus it isn't to bad.

I am a part-time MBA student, so I'm only taking one class this semester - Marketing Research.  I really like it so far..we've had some interesting assignments and our group project is working on a market research problem with a real company.  I might also pick up a B-term class depending on my schedule..

I'm in my second of six quarters to get an associates in architecture, so most of my classes are still pretty boring and basic:

English 101- Yes, I've been in college for three years, and I'm in English 101. None of my credits from my previous school were accepted . I could have tested out, but my admissions advisor suggested that I just cruise through and get an easy "A." Plus, now I don't have to take an additional elective to have a full course load. I hate this class with all of my being.

Technical Math- See English 101 for my feelings on this

Construction Methods and Materials- Probably the first leg of what sephorablue's methods and materials class is. I personally find it very dry and boring but very important and useful. The class is 3-1/2 hours of PowerPoint presentations every week, so it's a little hard to sit through.

Building Design and Technology- I like this class. The prof (also the head of my department) gave us requirements to design a buildable house using CAD and freehand sketches and let us go to it. It's our first design project so it's a weird feeling. There are little checkpoints along the way, like when he had us print up our roof plans to ensure that they were, in fact, buildable.

Intro to 2D & 3D Design- I loathed this class in the beginning. The prof had us do silly introductory assignments like sketch a 20' cube, then subtract and add area, then translate that into a house design, but with x,y, and z limitations. Now it's pretty cool because we got our final assignment: design a museum, with the only requirements being size and purpose of each area. I'm super-excited about it.

My program is on this dumb block system which is very poorly organized.  This is my last semester of class ever though!  I mean, assuming I don't want to get a doctoral degree.  Which I do NOT see happening.

My classes right now are:

Dysphagia: We study normal and disordered swallowing and say the word "bolus" a lot.  Prof is from Egypt where Speech-Language Pathologists are medical doctors.  I'm not sure she realizes that we are not.  Because of her accent she says "sheeks" instead of "cheeks" and "shewing" instead of "chewing" (both high frequency words in this class), which you can imagine doesn't go over so well in a room full of budding SLPs. . .

Medical Seminar:  We are learning the ins and outs of being an SLP in a medical setting.  Sometimes the class is boring, but we have guest speakers a lot and I am really interested whenever they talk to us about acute care stuff because I might want to do that.

Public School Practicum:  I go to an elementary school every day and fix kids.  It's awesome.

After midterm I will be finished with medical seminar and will add the following:

Aphasia: could be really interesting, but probably won't be due to prof.

Motor Speech:  not so excited about subject matter, same prof as Aphasia.

After these classes, I am all ready for some internships!
