Well I just had a fabulous night in the ER last night!! I went out for a nice early dinner with my boyfriend for his coach's meeting (he's an assistant coach for our local comm college's cross country and track team). An hour or so after dinner my stomach started to cramp up, and not long after my back started cramping up too! I couldn't seem to find a comfortable position to lie/sit in no matter what I did. I tried to go to sleep after SNL was over, but I still couldn't get comfortable so I decided to just go to the hospital. I knew it wasn't an emergency, but I was REALLY uncomfortable!! (I'd had this pain before and had to go to the ER so I was somewaht familiar with the whole situation.)
Anways, to make a long story short, I was there for like 3 hours, and they couldn't figure out what the hell was wrong with me!! It wasn't food poisoning, my liver and gall bladder looked okay (they did an ultrasound), my blood and UA came back normal, so once again, it's a mystery. The last time I went in for this they had no idea what was wrong with me either! So anyways, most of the pain is gone now, but if you touch my abdomen I'll punch you! The worst part was that they couldn't find a damn vein and had to dig around in my arm 3 times!!! Yeah, that was one fun f$&%ing night! Just thought I'd share :)
I'm so sorry!! That sucks. Even though you are feeling better I would still go see your family doctor. Since this isn't the first time this has happened, there could be something wrong. Hope you feel better!!

okay..don't laugh at me, but is it perhaps just really really terrible gas? i, uh, sometimes get really really painful gas uh, bubbles that make my stomach hurt. did the other time happen right after eating too? maybe it's something in the food, not poisoning per se but perhaps an allergy or reaction.

i had something similar happen my freshman year in college. i was in and out of the doctor's for weeks. i had the worst pains. i couldn't sleep, couldn't eat... it turned out it was my gallbladder. i had such small gallstones (they compared it to gravel), that it didn't really show up on ultrasounds. anyways, i feel your pain. it sucks to be miserable and to not know what's going on. i seriously think that they were about to send me to the psych ward, or they were going to accuse me of seeking pain meds.
sorry about the rough night.

Thanks so much for all your kind words! I'm still somewhat sore but that'll go away in a few days like last time.

Relrel, I totally thought about that! I was kinda embarrassed to go in case they told me it was just gas, but that's a totally different feeling than what I had going on. I asked the doctor if that's what she thought it was, but it was too high up for that. Also, I'd eaten the exact same meal before with no reactions, so it wasn't that. I think it was just some sort of fluke thing. Oh well
Lindsay, I'm glad you're doing better. I'm going to throw this out there though, just because of my own odd situation:
Did they, by any chance, tell you that you had a high white cell count? (Typically a high white cell count indicates some type of infection).
What happened to me was, I went to the ER with similar sounding pains. The ER ran tests and they couldn't determine what was wrong. I hurt so bad I was shaking and couldn't find a comfortable position to stand/sit/lie down. The pain didn't go away until they gave me a shot of Demerol, at which point I went to sleep. When I woke up, the pain was gone. The only thing the ER told me was that I had higher than normal white cell count. But they couldn't figure out what the infection might be.
I followed up with my Dr., but the pain was totally gone, so there really wasn't anything to do about it.
Fast forward to more than a year later - I'd had no recurrances since - and I'm in the ER again with the same issues. They ran tests - white cells still elevated - but couldn't figure it out, again. Finally the ER Doc said they were going to run a test for appendicitis. He didn't think it was presenting as that, but thought they'd just "rule it out".
Well, guess what? They didn't rule it out. The Dr. came rushing back to me and DH and said, we need to get you ready for surgery. His exact words were, "If the test hadn't shown it so clearly, I would have never believed it, but you have the most inflamed appendix I have ever seen". I had surgery within the hour - it was supposed to be with the laproscope (sp), but apparently my appendix was too inflamed so they actually did it the old-fashioned way and I have a two-inch scar on my lower abdomen.
Anyway, you might just ask about it, if you are so inclined. Your primary care doc may be able to test for it - I don't know what the test involves; I had so many done at one time and my memory of the testing is blurry because I was hurting so much at the time - but it probably wouldn't hurt to check. Not to be Chicken Little, but a ruptured appendix can be fatal.
Of course, if you've already had your appendix removed, then completely disregard my response. *s*

you know what, I did have a high white blood cell count, 12, I'm not sure if that's really high or what. I also want to say that's the only thing they could find last time. Hmm, I'll go call my mom who's a doc and see what she says. Thanks for the info though!!!!
I hope you're feeling better now. Maybe you should speak to your doctor about this and in the mean time keep a food diary daily of what you eat. Perhaps there might be so allergic reaction to food or a combination of foods.
Anyway, sorry you had to suffer like that. Take care.
