My brother has only had his for a little over a year, and he has been having troubles with his battery... and once the battery goes theres nothing you can do, your ipod is pretty much dead (from what he has told me), But basically his battery life is not lasting as long as it used to, and hes not really happy about it.  But.. they may have fixed this problem, as we got a letter saying certain ipods made during a certain time period had defective batteries.  In my personal opinion, I would definitely buy the warranty, we didn't and now im wishing we would have.  From my experience, electronics in general do not last as long as they used to.

buy it. I just sent back my third ipod for repair/replacement and would be extremely SOL if I hadn't made that purchase.

i didn't buy it. if your ipod breaks down (battery included) within a year of purchase they will fix it for your for free. well free is a technicality, within 6 months its totally free, after six months you have to pay s&h. i sent my mini back (after 6 months) and they replaced the battery. it cost me $30 for s&h, not great, but cheaper than the protection plan.

re what nicoley said, certain 3rd generation ipods have had battery problems, there's a class action suit (or was) which covers repairs. i don't have the information on hand, but i believe i posted about it in this thread, so maybe if you do a search it will come up. but basically if you bought your ipod within a certain time frame, i believe it's end of 2004-beginning of 2005 and the battery fritzes you're covered.

I just took my DH's i-pod in after he dropped it down a flight of cement stairs.  It was unrepairable and we didn't have the extended warrantyl.  We had to pay $29 for them to replace it with a new one.  We could have also extended the warranty an extra year for $59 with no charge for the new ipod  but we chose not to.
