I know magazines are always saying that certain things last 6 mos. or a year, but do you ever throw out your makeup? I usually keep mine for a long time if it doesn't smell or look weird. I just feel like it's such a waste. Is it really neccessary for any makeup except mascara (which I know has to be replaced pretty often)?

HTH some. I don't throw mine out very often. I feel like as long as you are cleaning your brushes, that bacteria isn't going to grow as quick. That is why they say you should throw it out, not because it expires. I have some makeup from 4 years ago that I rarely use (like goldish eyeshadow that I used for NYE) and don't think I should throw it away because it doesn't get used enough to 'go bad'.

Sometimes I go on a throwing-away spree, but usually I keep it until it looks like it has gone bad. If I buy something and two or three years later I still haven't regularly used it, I throw it away, which makes me feel bad that I spent money on it. I do throw my mascara away after three or four months though.

I only throw away my mascara away regularly (usually gone anyhow). My foundation is in a tube and I keep the cap on it so I don't feel the need to throw it out unless it is empty. I make sure I clean my brushes weekly and I don't have any problems.
I hate throwing makeup away too. But I do. Every few months I go through a drawer of makeup that use every now and then (my cheap makeup) and inspect each product. If the eyeshadow is in a million pieces, it's gone. If the lipstick is melted, it's gone. I look at it similiar to the theory of cleaning out my closet; if it's in really bad shape and I can't wear it, it's gone, and if I haven't touched it since I bought it...there's a low chance I'm going to.
I rarely throw out make-up because it never looks gross to me... the things that would "go bad" most quickly I use up before they go bad (like mascara and foundation). And even then, I keep those after I'm done using them because I use MAC stuff and you get a free lipstick for every 6 empties
ETA: And, like most of you said, I *try* to wash my brushes regularly, although I could be better about it!

i have so much make up it is beyond rediculous. i have two of those 3 drawer rubbermaids that sit on you counter full of makeup. i don't regularly throw anything away. i use that antibacterial spray on my makeup that they use at make up counters to clean the testers. and when i do get rid of stuff i just give it to my sisters and if i feel like i got rid of something i shouldn't have, i just barrow it back.
