I asked a couple of questions earlier about coloring my hair and I just wanted to give an update. I posted earlier here and here. Well I went to a local colorist. I have a couple of friends whose hair she has dyed red before. I was very impressed with their hair so I figured she could do mine. She put a level 6 cool red (ruby red) on my hair. It was a deposit only color. However, the only places it is red is at my roots and the blonde strands that were previously in my hair. The rest is still brown. I am so disappointed. I have gotten several compliments on it, but it is not even root to tip. I am afraid the only way I will ever be the red I want is to bleach my hair and them color it red. But, after my previous horrible hair trauma, I am not willing to do that. I may just have to be happy having brown hair.

What did the colorist say when she saw what developed? I mean, went in there for one thing and left with something else? She must have had an explanation.
Inside the shop it looked even, but when I got home and looked at it, I thought maybe it had not taken on the ends and was not even root to tip. I teach math/physics so I am over-analytical. I thought maybe I was just imagining things, but I have had two different people agree with me that it is not even root to tip. It is bright at the roots and progressively gets browner as you go toward the ends. I am going to call my colorist tomorrow. She was supposed to be getting me some color desposit shampoo when I left the shop Friday. I am going to ask her to take me back brown. I just don't think this red is me and I don't want to fry my hair trying to get there.

You know it sounds to me like you may be prone to "hot roots", this is when the color develops more quickly on the roots of the hair. A good stylist should be able to address that. But that said, if you want to be a truer red from "root to end" you'll need to do some color lifting if your anything darker than dark blonde. Between the lift process, and the fact that reds fade faster than any other color, it's pretty high maintenance. It also may take several visits over the course of months to get a red you really love.
