hair color didn't take

I finally took the plunge and decided to dye my own hair again.  I bought two different colors and brands.  The first is Revlon Colorsilk in Medium Auburn and the second is L'oreal Preference in Light Auburn.  I wasn't sure what level of auburn I really wanted so I just decided to strand test both.

I read lots of reviews on these on various sites and they mostly got great reviews.  My hair color falls in the range recommend on the boxes, but, nevertheless,   I did a strand test first with the Revlon Colorsilk exactly like the instructions said.  When I wiped it off and blowed it dry, it had done nothing to my hair.  Then I went to the other side of my head and did a strand test using L'Oreal Preference and it also did nothing to my hair.  I don't know what is going on.  I am so discouraged and frustrated.  cry  I really want to stop paying for color, but it looks like I am going to have to do so.  Does anyone know why it didn't change my hair color?    In the past I have used L'Oreal Coloeur Experte in Ginger Twist and it has worked well.  However, I wanted a slightly more vibrant red than that gives.

Sorry to read that, I hear your frustration! I've never colored at home, but I hear from my hairstylist about the base, being able to match the base for color to your hair color & quality...maybe try to do it professionally once & seek advice of  the colorist. Best of luck!

It didn't dye it at all? That's so strange. I have no idea why it wouldn't work. I agree about going to a colorist and getting it done at this point. Some things are worth spending teh money on and since you've had hair issues in the past, it might be healthier for you hair to let a pro try.

Do either box have a toll free customer number or a website to contact with questions? They might be able to give you some answers there.

I don't know where you live, but I know we have Paul Mitchell schools here in LA, I went there quite often in the past, they're EXCELLENT in coloring, around $30 (used to be about 5 years ago), they have instructors who check every formula BEFORE it goes on your hair, so no screw ups, I had my hair done in shades of red/gold/copper - people stopped me in the malls to compliment on the color. (They don't excell as much in cuts). I'm sure other schools, no necessarily PM, would do the same, with supervision & quality color. Maybe you could try that.

Did you mix the color+volumizer first? What color are you starting with? Also, did you have product build up (maybe some silicones)? Try using a clarifying shampoo and redye.

My natural color is a level 6 ashy brown (even though every hairstylist I have been to says it is dark blonde,  it looks brown to me)  You can go to my blog below and see my hair.   I have about 0.5 inches of that at the roots.  The rest is colored a coppery dark blonde/brown--I would say about a level 7.  I am going to strand test one more color--Feria Copper Shimmer.  I have been reading that is nothing else works on you hair that this will.  We shall see wink  Here is the box.  I will keep all of you updated.  Thanks so much everyone for your help.

Hmmm - I looked at your blog but I can't tell, is your natural color darker than the color you're trying to dye it to? My hair is naturally light brown, and when I dyed it red I still had to have it bleached first (even though the red I wanted was darkish). Maybe your hair is just too dark to "take" it? I'm still surprised you don't see ANY difference, though....if I didn't bleach my hair first the color wouldn't turn out how I wanted, but you could still see some difference.

I second the suggestion to call the companies - if they don't have answers, they might at least give you a refund!
