austin, texas--websites for info?
Permalink Closed

i have been wanting to go to austin for a long time now, and i'm hoping 2006 is going to be the year--it's one of my resolutions.  i may end up going by myself, but hopefully i can get a friend to come along.  obviously i am very flexible about when i would go, so i was wondering if there are any websites anyone could recommend that give info about events going on in town, what bands are scheduled to play which places, etc., so that i can plan my trip around that?

thanks!

I love, love, love Austin...we go there all the time! It's a great city! You can look at www.austinchronicle.com for what's going on. It has a really good city guide. Hope this helps!

Check out citysearch. It is always my favorite site when researching for trips. If you can you should try to go when they have the SXSW music festival. I think it is always around March. That is a cool time to go since there are a ton of bands there. Whenever you decide to go it is a great place and you will really love it there. Also check out South Congress avenue-there are some cute shops.

I'm no help but blubirdie lives there so she would be your best source.  She seems to be pretty up to date with things and I bet she would know when things are.  I know there is a huge 3 day music festival in the fall if you are into that sorta thing.  I think they are all local type bands but I may be wrong.

I lived in Austin for a while so feel free to PM me with questions and stuff.  Off the top of my head...you might want to look into when South by Southwest(SXSW) or Austin City Limits is going on.  Both are really big music events.  Other things to consider:

-The University of Texas (my alma mater!  It's a huge campus and I think it'd be interesting to see)
- State Capitol - nice to walk around
- 6th Street - bars and nightlife..definitely check it out at least one night
- Bats on Congress Bridge - pretty cool..tons of bats flying out..check times for ideal bat viewing
- Shopping at By George and south congress
- Whole Foods Market - it's corporate headquarters I think and it's so huge!!!  I'm a geek.
- Kayaking on Lake Travis - you can rent kayaks
- Barton Springs - natural pool..the water is pretty cold though
- San Marcos Outlet Malls - it's a short drive from Austin but there are two huge outlet centers right next to each other (Off 5th, Neimans Rack, Coach, etc)

And there's tons more to do but that's all I can think of for now.
