Do you ever buy multiple colors of a specific item? I guess it's common to get a couple colors of a sweater you really like, or a pair of pants. What about handbags or shoes? Just curious...
I've bought a few colors of a Gap sweater before, and most of my work pants are the same style but different colors. There was a handbag I saw yesterday that I wanted in two different colors (black and wine), but I thought it would be weird to buy multiples of handbags.

I came, I saw, I did a little shopping.
very rarely will i buy multiples- though i have some exceptions- i bought the anthropologie/mitzi baker bag in black and brown, though they are diff. sizes and are used entirely differently. i have two cardi-wrap shirts- black and brown, wear them both a ton basic long sleeve shirts- i tend to have a couple colors in each style- usually i find a nice brand a good price (velvet, splendid, zooey, etc) so i stock up on what they have. cuts of jeans in diff. washes or same wash, hemmed differently
i dont think its a bad thing to get multiples of an item if they're worn in diff. ways and if its somewhat basic and something you'll use a ton. like mk/nicole ritchie types have balenciagas or spy bags in many colors- i hear martha stewart carries exclusively hermes so she must have a ton of birkins. i wouldn't get multiples in something trendy personally- just something that i can work into my wardrobe permanently.
I think it's ok to buy multiples in basic items, but I don't buy it in shoes or handbags. I like all my stuff to be different, and I don't feel like I accomplish that if I buy multiples of the same item. However when I was younger I totally did this! Ultimately, I feel it's whatever meshes with your lifestyle better.

I do it fairly often. Usually with basics like t-shirts and tank tops but I when I love something I want to be able to wear it as much as possible so I'll often get multiples - either in the same color if it's something cheap that I just want to be able to wear to death or in different colors if I want it to work with different oufits in my wardrobe. I've bought multiples of shoes before if they were really comfortable and/or really cheap. Or something that is hard to find - like boots that fit properly.
And this fall, I bought two gap velvet blazers because the first fit so well - one in cream, one in black.
Other than that, I like to diversify to stretch my wardrobe.
One thing I NEED to do is buy "back up" shoes - when I find a pair I like, I need to get another replacement pair for when the first pair wears out. This happens to me all the time with sandals, my favorites never last the whole season
Absolutely. Right now I have four of the same Express v-neck cami that fits like a dream, and the colors work with my wardrobe. I bought a pair of Hue tights that I love in brown, so just went back and bought the black pair. I have two of the same sweater, different colors, from H&M this summer because, again, they fit wonderfully.
I don't buy multiples of signature items, but for basics - there's no other way to go (for me, at least). Fit is paramount for me (and difficult!) so to find something off the rack that doesn't have to be tailored is heaven, and I will usually buy more than one, providing the colors are flattering to me and fit with my existing wardrobe.

OMG-I never do. I have a weird OCD thing where I can never buy things that are the same or similar. I feel like it's a waste, I always want different things.
i do it all the time. i have some kind of weird famine-mentality going on lately where i feel like if i don't buy several of something, i'll never be able to get it again. particularly t-shirts, jeans, and shoes, and obviously i will buy more if the item is very inexpensive.
I do. Since I find it is fairly hard to fit clothes to my figure, I buy up like crazy when I find something that works. I have multiples of...
J. Crew boybeaters
French Connection logo/humor tees
Alvin Valley work pants (in the same pinstripe...one's black and the other's brown)
Juicy Hoodies
Juicy Pants
Havaianas flip flops
I'm also pretty obsessive about a good quality pair of opaque black tights. I must have at least 12 pairs (maybe 4 from Nordies, 4 from Express and the others from all sorts of brands).
Those are all basics for me, though. I weave these items into all my outfits.
I did it couple of times with pants, editors from Express and another pair from NY&Co, and I have 2 shirts that are the same, diff colors.
Usually I don't do that, but often I realize I should have bought 2 of something: for example, last season I bought a charcoal v neck from Express in merino wool, and I whish I had bought 2 in different colors. But I never know how much I'll wear something when I buy it, guess it's lack of planning.
When I saw this thread I thought of "Multiples" that clothing line in the eighties with all the stretchy knit items...I did a search and it appears you can still get them, unless this is an old site .
I do buy multiples of basics like white t-shirts, tanks, if I find a good long-sleeved shirt I'll buy it in more than one color. Also if I find a pair of pants that I really like the fit on I'll buy in every color.
I did kind of do that with handbags too. I carry my chestnut Coach hampton carry-all EVERY day to work and I love it but she was starting to get a little worn. So I bought a similar one in Black and a white canvas one for the summer. I figure it's a classic bag and it will get a lot of use as my "mini-briefcase" for work. I think if it's something classic it's worth buying multiples!

Bahahahahaha, halah - I am not ashamed to say that I had some of those! I'd forgotten about them. They were a Godsend though, when I worked retail. So comfy...and yet, so unflattering!
I used to think the '70's was the worst fashion decade, but I am seriously having to face that the '80's, my "coming of age years", as it were, may well take the prize. *s*

Oh, the 80's were worse than the 70's by far!! I am 34. I lived the 80's. Neon, big hair, acid wash. This stuff aint coming back for a good reason!! Please tell me these things aren't coming back!! Please!
And to answer the question, yes, I will buy multiples in something if it fits good, feels great, etc. I do this to the point where my SO says "Don't you have six shirts exactly like that one?" I don't really view it as buying multiples so much as having a "personal style" and sticking with it.
I must have 4 of the exact same black t-shirts from GAP. 3 of them in white. 1 in pink and 1 in green. I am crazy.
Also have multiple JCrew tanks, Express Dress pants, Joes jeans, black sweaters, Long-sleeve tees from Anthro (I think I have 5 all the same style by different colors.) as well as many many other items.
I try to be careful with my things but if something happens and I spill, ruin, or shrink something. I must say it is VERY comforting to have another one just like it still in my closet.
Yes, I def buy in multiples, for example, if I really like a shoe I will buy it in a couple of different colors. I think I have five pairs of shoes I have in two different colors. I can't seem to ever be able to decide on just one color!!
The only multiples that I remember are the Target skirts. They were both from Merona, same style with pleats, 100% silk but the print and color was different.
I probably buy multiples more often than I care to admit to. I do it in some sweaters (cable knit) and good dress pants (black, gray, tan). Other than that I try to stay away from doing that because life is much too short to spend money on the same thing.
