I've been searching ebay for some oxblood boots and have come across a brand I've never heard of before. It's called Dexter and reminds me of Frye boots in style. I'm guessing that they were Frye knock offs from the 70's? Anyone ever heard of them before?

I'm assuming this is the same group: http://www.dextershoe.com
I don't know if this is accurate, but I consider them in the same category as Eastland (famous for their loafers and deck shoes), GH Bass (known for their loafers), and maybe Hush Puppies. Very classic, casual styling. Back in the 70s, I imagine their quality was much better than it is now. I'd be interested to see where those boots were made!
Oh, and I love the cognac collored boots from the 70s look! I have been wanting a pair just like the ones I had when I was a kid. The ones I used to have were more orangey, and I loved them. They were kind of a bittersweet color.

I had wondered if the Payless Dexter were the same brand. I'll bet that the company sold the name to Payless. Those were the only version I could locate with a search and I usually avoid Payless (they hurt my feet.) But these boots have to be pre-Payless.
The labels at the vintage ones I'm looking at are made in the USA. Bass & Hush Puppies aren't really my style, but they are sturdy well made shoes, so that gives me some hope on quality at least. Id love a Frye pair, but seeing as how it's a want and not a need, I can't justify spending the $$$ on Frye. Plus I have a closet full of boots. Literally. I'll need to get rid of one to make space for a new pair.
I think I know what color you're thinking of. Sort of squash/pumpkin color, right? Like these?
Yes. Mine were a bit deeper and redder, but those are on the right track. :)
I'm kinda surprised at what HushPuppies has on their site right now. More with-it than I thought. Of course, they would have to exert an enormous marketing campaign to erase the effect their name has on my brain. I immediately think of my Gramma whenever I hear "Hush Puppies." :-/
