Pots and Pans
Permalink Closed

Ok, so I called my local womens rescue shelter, to ask about donating presents, and she told me the story of this lady who was homeless with a 1 year old child, and they were just able to get a home for her. and she has no pots and pans, so that is one of the things on her christmas list.  Im a poor grad student so I dont have alot to spend, but would like to buy these for her for christmas... Anyone know where I could get these at a cheap price... I think walmart and those places sell stuff like this, but I dont want something that is going to be too cheaply made that wont last, and then she will need pots and pans again next year.

Also, she asked for her son to have twin bed sheet set, as he just got a bed too... Any ideas of where to get cheap, but comfy ones for him?

Hope you guys can help!

Definitely check Walmart, Target, KMart, Walgreens.  I'd also check Goodwill or other thriftstores if you can't find anything adequate.  Many get donations from Target, and I often find things there with pricetags still on them.

Good luck!

I'd get cast iron pans.  They're heavy, but they'll last a lifetime and they're great.  Plus, they can add iron to the food you cook, which is good in case they're not getting all the nutrition they need.

Nicoley, what a wonderful christmas present. I agree about checking out Walmart, Kmart, etc. Same places for sheets - flannel ones tend to be inexpensive and will be warm during the winter.

Since you are a grad student - you might be able to convince some committee or club at school to put this out as a Christmas gift giving idea - we had one where we received toys for a local children's shelter.
Good luck !

I would try to get them donated, try Target or Walgreens.  When I was training for my marathon & raising money for the Stroke Association, I was amazed at what I would get when I would just ask.  Can't hurt!  You might need a letter on the shelter's letterhead or something else like that as proof, but I would literally hand them that & walk away with stuff.

nicoley, you are so sweet! I would also try places like TJMaxx, Marshalls and Ross. They have a lot of pots and pans that are about the same price as Target, but nicer quality.

I have some T-Fal pots &pans & they are really my favorites even though I have some that are much more expensive. You can get them at walmart & they are pretty inexpensive. Online there is only a set, but they sell them individually in the store.

HTH.

I always check in on Macy's home clearance section.  Many good things at fabulous prices.  My recent purchase was a $60 Queen size sheet set for under $17.  And they have tons of twin sizes for even less.

ikea has a kitchen in a box type thing for like $55 that has all kinds of things you need to start a kitchen- pots and pans, some knives, measuring cup, cutting boards, etc. Not top of the line stuff, but pretty decent- I used them in my first apartment and am in the process of upgrading now.

Check Kohl's too.

As far as brands, Caphalon, Farberware are some other good ones.

i suggest ikea- we got a very basic set of 3 pots- i think one was a frying pan, and two pots- one small one medium- for $15.  they are def. not the best, but i don't think they're going to break per se.  make sure you get a pot holder though- the handles pick up heat more and get hot.  make sure you get a frying pan and a pot that is big enough to boil pasta in/ heat soup in.  maybe a cheap pasta drainer (colander? don't know name) too.  those are pretty basic things that are cheap but very important.  you could probably get all for $20 at ikea.  i need to look into doing somethng like this myself.
