wedding- bermuda/july/sat/6pm- what to wear?
Permalink Closed

A close friend (who is a very picky fashion type) is getting married in bermuda in july. 6pm ceremony- no attire guidelines on the invite.......Im pulling my hair out. (bridesmaids are wearing teal zac posen)

Im a pear shape- classic/50s style/structured cuts that cover the knee suit my body and taste best but Im having such a hard time finding something that doesnt feel too "daytime".

My ideal/dream dress would be this Kate Ermilio (in a different color) but its waaay outside of my price range ($400ish max):

Look-4.jpg

so far ive come across

1) Jcrew cha cha dress- (so close to what I want...but doesnt seem to cover the knees! If it fits well enough I may see if a tailor can let down the hem- but is linen/cotton dressy enough?)

2) Kate Spade Zahara (PATCH pockets seem to ruin the dress!! Also the color combo sort of bothers me) silk/cotton

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRr2CnaArmlMl23yReMWfHEPkx4TaqssLMQiI0DzepPmbOUg5T2NJMU1848_078?$s7productgrid$

and I already own 3) J crew Versailles (but im fairly certain the bride will consider this dress white, shun me forever, and throw me out of the wedding)

any advice/recommendations? tia!

Love the 1st yellow option, pricy...maybe look for something more flowing? Schiffon in silk fabric? (Bermuda, breeze...). All options you posted look beautiful, it's better if you go to the store & try one on the body.

Exciting!!!

Can you try a tall size (I think that they carry them for their bridal party selections) in the J Crew and have it shortened for you? I would imagine that it's easier to take up a hem than let it down?

Bermuda is really warm and sticky in July. I think a linen or cotton dress would be much more comfortable for you than say a silk dress. And lets face it, if you are traveling all the way to Bermuda to celebrate a friend's wedding, I can't imagine that she would be too picky over what her guests choose to wear. She should be thankful that you took on the extra expense of a destination wedding.

Have you tried http://www.shabbyapple.com? They have some cute reasonably priced vintage inspired dresses, and most of them are below the knee.

There's also http://www.eshakti.com/, where you can kind of customize your dress with length, etc.  I ordered a dress from them and was pleased with my order.  also reasonably priced.

I rather wonder if that's enough time in which to have someone alter a store-bought dress (maybe J.Crew or something even less expensive) into a full on knock-off of the first yellow one. It is gorgeous!

I thought of chiffon- but it can make me look even more hippy if not cut just right (pear shaped).

I plan to try on the dresses that I can- but hope to be a different size by the end of june (fingers crossed) so will wait a bit

 thanks for the recommendations!

wondering if I could pull this off- saw some irl pics that suggest it can come past the knee on a shorter person- and its cotton *yay*- but is this too "daytime" for a 6pm wedding? (prob still order for the trip)

That yellow dress is so pretty!  Everything spring will be going on sale in next few weeks, so maybe wait at least another week or two and you can probably score a $600/$700 dress in your price range?

That's a hard length to find- one of my pet peeves are dresses that are too short.  I think my minimum length to feel comfortable is 35" from shoulder to hem (which is still mid thigh on me).  It annoys me when I see a cute dress and look at the length and find out it's like, 32" long.  A top on me, more or less, and I'm not THAT tall at 5'7".  Like this dress:

I don't understand this obsession with making things so short, when shortening a dress is probably the easiest alteration on this planet, bar fancy embroidery/beading at the bottom.

I'll keep my eyes peeled, I also like structure.  Sometimes Black Halo has some nice basic longer dresses, in lots of colors:

I don't have any suggestions but 1) how tall are you? The J crew dress will hit you lower if you are shorter than the model. and 2) are you sure you really want a structured silk dress for Bermuda in summer? You're going to be sweating!

 thanks for the help!

1) Im 5'4, so yeah, I am hoping that the jcrew dress will fall just below the knee on me

2) Cotton would be ideal- but im having a hard time finding a cotton dress that looks dressy enough

I am currently considering this 100% cotton Lela Rose dress:

but b/c the dress is so expensive, i would have to get it from "rent the runway"....and the rental price is just about the price of the jcrew dress......so it seems impractical

well- I just realized that I will need 2 new dresses for the weekend in bermuda--(welcome reception/dinner + wedding itself) so I rented the lela rose dress for the ceremony ($85 for 4 days w/ a monthly subscription to rent the runway)

Hey!  How'd it work out?  Also, how'd you get that deal on the rental?  A monthly subscription?  I'm thinking about renting a dress for an upcoming wedding as well.

The Lela rose dress worked out really well! I got a bunch of compliments and was very comfortable in the heat.

The rent the runway program is called the "outfit of the month program"- $85 a month (16th of the month, cancellable anytime) gets you 1 dress in 2 sizes as well as an accessory (jewelry, a clutch etc)

I have another wedding to attend next month, after which I plan to cancel my subscription.

ps- you can also rent a second dress in the same rental period for an additional $25 (only in one size though)

note- I am not affiliated with the company in any way, I just really wanted to wear that lela rose dress.

This is amazing!!!  What a great deal.  I may have to do the same.  How did you find the fit of the Lela Rose dress?  I think it'd work for my upcomming wedding.  Also, what do you mean by 16th of the month?  Mine is in Sept so are you saying I have to join by Aug 16th to rent in Sept?  Sorry for all the questions, I've been trying to ask their 'Live Chat' but it is awful!

I found the fit of the dress true to size, but the straps sat further apart on my shoulders than I anticipated from the picture (more portrait type neckline than a straightforward v-neck tank shape)- but that wasn't a big deal, just meant that I wore a different bra than I had planned to. Note: it also has a crinoline (sp) + slip layer underneath the skirt to add fullness.

In terms of the monthly plan, from what I understand, they send you a coupon code on the 16th of the month (of the month that you join, though if you join on the 18th- i would assume that they give you the code right away, rather than wait until the following month?) and you use the code like a promo code at checkout- toward a dress for an event during the following month (ex. aug code for a september rental) Every month you are a member, they send you a new code.

However, realize that dresses are often reserved WAY in advance by some. I was lucky that the lela rose dress was still available in the sizes I needed for my dates, b/c I reserved on June 16th for a July 5th rental. My guess is the program helps them rent out the less popular dresses?

hth a little? Double check with the company- I would call for clarification.
