Ok I am still having the hardest time picking music....BECAUSE I AM THE PICKIEST PERSON! Ceremony- Song for me to walk out and processional. I am not inspired by the typical wedding music. I like Enya, but I feel it is overdone.
First Dance- I have picked so many songs and FI says no to all of them...he says it isn't the one yet. Here is a list of what I already suggested.... David Gray- Be Mine, Now and Always, & The One I love Ray Lamontagne- Hold you in my arms Pat Greene- Wave on Wave Keith Urban- Making Memories of Us Edwin McCain-I'll Be & Couldn't Ask for more Sade- By Your Side Ben Folds- The Luckiest Coldplay- Fix You Faces- Maybe I'm Amazed Gavin DeGraw- More than anyone
I want something that is either an oldy and good cheezy love song or something cool that is really about us. Any ideas? TIA!!!!
I'm not sure where they fit, but my favorite romantic songs...
Cat Power - I Found A Reason, Sea Of Love Wilco - I'm The Man Who Loves You Mirah - Sweepstakes Prize Elliot Smith - Say Yes Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Porcelein Song Sleater-Kinney - Oh! The White Stripes - Hotel Yorba Morrissey - Moon River The Strokes - Under Control Rufus Wainwright - Tower Of Learning The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) Bright Eyes - First Day Of My Life Kirsty MacColl - You And Me Baby The Magnetic Fields - You're My Only Home Regina Spektor - Us Cat Stevens - Two Fine People
ETA...Upon second look these are mostly either inappropriate or not in tune with your taste. I would check out the Cat Power ones though.
I went to a wedding once where the first dance was When I Need You by....crap, I can't remember his name.....oh, Leo Sayer. Here are the lyrics:
When I need you I just close my eyes and I'm with you and all that I so want to give you It's only a heartbeat away
CHORUS:
When I need love I hold out my hands and I touch love I never knew there was so much love keeping me warm night and day
Miles and miles of empty space in between us a telephone can't take the place of your smile but you know I won't be travelin' forever it's cold out, but hold out, and do I like I do
When I need you I just close my eyes and I'm with you and all that I so wanna give you babe it's only a heartbeat away
It's not easy when the road is your driver honey that's a heavy load that we bear but you know I won't be traveling a lifetime it's cold out but hold out and do like I do oh, I need you
CHORUS
When I need you I just close my eyes and you're right here by my side keeping me warm night and day
I just hold out my hands I just hold out my hand and I'm with you darlin' yes, I'm with you darlin' all I wanna give you it's only a heartbeat away oh I need you darling
I thought it was a great wedding song. I see in addition to Leo Sayer, Rod Stewart and Celine Dion have also performed the song. Stick with Leo. It is pleasingly retro and not too sappy!!!!!
Also, I saw some pink and green striped socks today and thought of you!!
Good suggestions. Maddie- I like all sorts of music, so any suggestion is greatly appreciated!
Collette- I actually just downloaded the Bon Jovi & Pretenders song. I also got True Companion by Marc Cohen. I couldn't find the two Neil Diamond ones...still looking on stupid Itunes.
Sage- I love that people think of me and my obsession with pink and green! I added navy to the wedding for my fiance's sake. That song might work too, if he likes it....good lord. I am picky on ceremony and he is picky on first dance.
Our story if this helps: We have dated exclusively for 7 years( as in no break ups or cheating) and are both 29 now. So we have grown up a lot together and seen each other through numberous jobs and the last half of college. My fiance had a lot of growing up to do when we first met, and he has so I stood by him through all of that. Now I wasn't a perfect little angel myself, I am the one not working now. Also our wedding is in SC and very laid back and as casual as a 6pm wedding is. Thank you so much to everyone!
i love crazy love, by van morrison (originally i think) but i have the live jackson browne one. i t hink aaron neville also does it, but i prefer a deeper voice singing it. such a beautiful song I can hear her heartbeat From a thousand miles And the heavens open Every time she smiles And when I come to her That's where I belong Yet I'm running to her Like a river song
She give me love, love, Love, love, crazy love She give me love, love, Love, love, crazy love
She's got a fine sense of humor When I'm feeling low down And when I come to her When the sun goes down She takes away my trouble, Take away my grief
Take away my heartache, I go right to sleep
Yes I need her in the daytime Yes I need her in the night Yes I want to throw my arms around her Kiss her hug her kiss her hug her tight
And when I'm returning from so far away She gives me some sweet lovin' Brightens up my day Yes it makes me righteous, Yes it makes me whole Yes it makes me mellow Down to my soul
She give me love, love, Love, love, crazy love She give me love, love, Love, love, crazy love
also, forever by ben harper stay with you by john legend
Badly Drawn Boy - The Shining The Beatles - In My Life (sorry I know it's cheesy) Belle & Sebastian - If She Wants Me Ben Kweller - Lizzy Beth Orton - I Love How You Love Me Cat Stevens - The Wind (although this song doesn't explicitly mention anything about love I've always thought of it being about coming back to the one, I don't know why) Feist - Mushaboom Rilo Kiley - I Never
we danced to ben folds' the luckiest for our first dance and it was very emotional. it's such a lovely song. and lots of our guests commented on how much they enjoyed hearing a new song (it's clearly not a new song, but it's not really mainstream at all so some of our guests had never heard it before) instead of the usual first song choices (at last, crazy love, the way you look tonight, etc)
other songs that were definite contenders for us were -
simply - sara hickman
tomorrow in her eyes - ron sexsmith
book of love - peter gabriel
hold on to me - cowboy junkies
if i should fall behind - bruce springsteen
my suggestion is to pick a song that you both like and that feels meaningful to you as a couple. also, if you pick a long song, make sure you feel comfortable with that. the luckiest is a pretty long song and for a while we were worried that it would seem like an eternity when we were dancing to it. friends of ours who hate dancing/being in the spotlight made sure to pick a song that was just about 3 minutes. also, whatever you pick, make sure you try dancing to it - some songs are gorgeous and meaningful, but they are really hard to find/keep a beat to or may be too slow or too fast to dance comfortably to, so just keep that in mind as well.
eta: after rereading your post about your relationship and the suggestions posted already, i think the pretenders' i'll stand by you would be really perfect. and true companions is a very appropriate first dance song as well. if you don't mind serious cheese, you could check out faithfully by journey. that's really old school and definitely high on the cheese scale. :)
also, if your fiance keeps rejecting all of your suggestions, i would put some of the pressure on him to find something... as picky as you say you are, he seems to be even pickier if he has already rejected a bunch of your suggestions.

Who knows my fiance listens to the first verse and changes it if he doesn't like it...ugh....well it is the only thing that he asking to have input on so I have to give him this! Thanks to everyone and I will let you know what we decide! There are some really great suggestions!
i just wanted to throw "my" song out there. i want it to be "my one and only love" sting sings my favorite version, but i know some other people do too. sting's version is on the leaving las vegas soundtrack. i get teary-eyed just day-dreaming about it.

I am appalled that he didn't like your David Gray suggestions!
Have you heard the Magnetic Fields version of this? I didn't even know it was a cover til I saw this post!
Just kidding! I just looked it up and the Peter Gabriel one is this cover. Anyway, you should both check out the Magnetic Fields version, it's good though leaning towards cheesy.

i *love* the magnetic fields version of this song - they are one of my favorite bands. the reason we liked the peter gabriel version better for the wedding is that his version is really haunting (love that about peter gabriel's voice) and more romantic/less cheesy sounding than the MF version. we actually used both versions for our wedding video since we like the song, and both versions, so much.

Hmm I found both the Magetic Fields version and the Peter Gabriel version on iTunes. The Magnetic Fields one is on 69 Love Songs and the Peter Gabriel on is on the Shall We Dance? soundtrack.
I listened to the iTunes clip of the Peter Gabriel one and it sounds good!
