Birthday gift for 1-year-old

DH and I have been invited to our friends' daughter's birthday party. She'll be turning one.

What are some gift ideas? I am baby/kid-illiterate! Thank you.

How much do you want to spend? For $20 you could get a picture book, and then get a stuffed animal that matches it. Like:

I like doing this because I want kids to like to read, and I want them to love animals, so....I guess I'm sort of pushing my own agenda here.

Books are often my go-to present for friends kids. They will get so many toys & clothes that it'll become a bit of an "awwwwwwweeeee" filled blur by the time that the last present has been opened. But more often than not, the kid will grab one of the books I've given him or her at some point that day and sit down with it. One of my favorite things is to go into the children's section of a bookstore and find a book that I loved as a kid and get it for the child. It's like passing along a memory.

Hi! Books are always a good idea, you can personalize a book if you have enough time: some online Co do books customized to the child: you provide the name, address & perhaps a 2-3 names of friends/siblings of this child & pick a book - Princess story for a girl / Dinosaur story for a boy, for instance, they have a choice. Then the child gets the book where she/he & those friends/siblings are the characters.

I ordered such books for our friends' kids, memory forever, was also very inexpensive, like $15 or so....I provided one of the website addresses, but it's not the one I ordered from, 'cause I can't remember it....sorry.

Have fun at the party!

Thanks everybody. Book(s) and a cute sun hat (since summer is approaching) are what I think I'll give. :)

I like the sun hat idea. My SIL bought a really cute one for her friend's newborn at Target last week.

The hat is shaped the same but has a different floral pattern on it. red/magenta/coral colored flowers - kinda like azaleas. - Actually, I got her a bucket hat. Its hard to tell with those flowers onthe pic.

It reminds me: by summer time I tend to get girls sun glasses:) they're so cute & inexpensive for the little ones:) But you're right, a hat for 1-year-old is more appropriate, they don't really tolerate "thingies" on their face, as sun glasses:))))
