I know this sounds like such a dumb question. But last night I tried the stair climber for the first time and I just could not figure it out. I even watched a youtube video about it before I left so I didn't look like an idiot because I'd never done it before! The one I was on was like this:
When I step on it, I just slowly sink back to the floor. If I try to go at what I think is a normal pace, I get stuck at the top of the range because it takes so long for me to sink back down. Even with the resistance/level turned all the way down, it took like 5 seconds to complete a step. From what I can see there's no way to make it push down faster. Am I totally missing something? The lights were going and everything so I don't think it was an issue of it being out of order.
(I know I should've asked a gym employee for help but....my gym is one of those dinky $9/month deals so it's not exactly crawling with helpful people.)

Sounds like a problem with the machine if you had the reistance low. The only other thing it could have been is if you were going up a hill at the time. You could put a note on it maybe(??).
When I do the one at my gym, if I just stand on it, it sinks down but I have to pump quickly in order to not sink. If this mechanism isnt going fast enough maybe it is out of order.
Thanks ladies! I've only been to the gym once since I posted this and I just did weights so I didn't try the other stair climber machine, but I'm going tonight and I'll try the other one to see if maybe the first one I tried was just messed up somehow. I was thinking it wasn't because the lights and keypad were working, but I guess that doesn't really make sense - it could still be messed up mechanically. Guess I just figured it was a problem with me because I didn't know what I was doing
