I don't know how I feel about this. I think tanning beds are an awful idea all around, but I don't know if it's the govt's job to tell you that you can't do it.
Australia is known as the sunburnt country, where beaches are thronged with bathers basking in the sun and the rates of melanoma, a potentially fatal form of skin cancer, are the highest in the world.
For decades public health campaigns have urged people to wear sunscreen, hats and sunglasses and avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day, but now they say even tanning on a sunbed is not safe and must be banned.
The country's most populous state New South Wales has taken the strongest line so far, saying commercial solariums will become illegal in three years, given mounting evidence that the use of sunbeds is linked to increased melanoma risk.
I see what you mean. While I don't use tanning beds, wear SPF religiously and may have gone on a small rant recently when my brother and SIL used them to get a base tan for a recent trip, I still don't think it's right to ban them. For example, cigarettes are known to be a high caner risk, but if you are over 18 you can still buy them at the local drug store. Maybe making an age requirement is a better alternative. If you are over 18 or 21, you should be capable of making an important personal health decision.

I would definitely get behind an age requirement for tanning!

I agree with requiring that someone is at least 18. I also agree that people should be able to make their own decisions about their body. However, Australia has socialist health care, and I can see why the government would want to try to reduce their healthcare costs by doing away with a device that contributes to them.
