3-4 weeks is such a short time that I wouldn't spend a lot anyway. I think cookies are a great idea. Maybe you could make an assortment and there's bound to be a kind in there he likes. Even if you just got a couple of tubes of those slice and bake ones, it would be fairly inexpensive, but still a nice gesture.

i agree. he's probably not expecting you to get him anything at all, so cookies would be perfect.

I agree, a bunch of cookies. Also, mabye make it like a "travel kit" a funny book or crossword puzzle book, a couple of those cheap handheld card or trivia games. That could be cute.

I like luv2shop's idea of a travel kit. I'd buy some of those sodoku books, a few good books, maybe a cd or two, some food (suited for travel), and some antibacterial lotion or something like that. That's a very cute idea.

What about a sweater? That's fairly generic and he'll need it in New Zealand? Maybe something from BR so it's not too, too pricey (maybe on sale?) but it's nice enough to be a gift. Or maybe even the Gap, if you're so inclined.

Oh and I love the cookies too. I think that's a great gift. But I'd add something else in it, just in case. Maybe a dvd or something?

I travelled around New Zealand a few years ago this time of year, and even though it's their summer, it's still freezing there. So I think a sweater would be nice. And maybe a Lonely Planet guide of NZ. They're the best travel guides for young people:

Or cookies would be good too. Or if he has an MP3 player, you could get him a gift certificate to iTunes or something so he can download a bunch of music before his trip. Just some ideas.
