dressing down a lace dress

I bought myself some pretty royal blue lace and am planning to make myself a lace dress.

Here is the lace:

I plan to make a dress like this with a vogue pattern I have:

JS Collections Royalty-Inspired <em>Lace Dress</em> - Navy/White 16

 

I really don't like the white underlay on this dress.  I am thinking of doing the underlay the same royal blue as the dress.

However, I have no special occasion to wear it to other than work and church, but I want a lace dress (stomps foot!!! biggrin)  I know lace dresses are popular and I have seen them everywhere.  Yesterday at church, a girl had one on that was a pretty eggplant color.  It did not look too dressy, but I am wondering if the royal blue color I have chosen will make mine too dressy, even for church service.  Is there a way I can dress it down a little, or should I just wear it as it is when I get it made?

Only thing I can think of is boots and tights (instead of heels and hose or bare). Maybe a long cardigan in a nicer/finer fabric?

I think Kelly and pollyjean are right. Accessories will help dress it down a bit. Flat boots and tights and maybe belt it with a worn-looking leather belt. During the Spring I think it'd look great with a white blazer and flats too.

Any reason you aren't using a nude lining so the lace shows?

How about a fun color lining like hot pink or coral or turquoise that would make it less "evening?" And then make an optional sash in that color, or even patent belt (assuming you find one) in that color?

Different sleeves would dress it down too, I bet. Sleeveless? Under a cardigan, or how about a white denim blazer?

I like Suasoria's idea of different sleeves. I do love it as the pattern shows, but if you want to dress it down, making it sleeveless would really make a difference I think. With sleeves it seems more "night out" but picturing it sleeveless makes it seem "Easter morning."

I guess it depends on your church/work dress codes, though!

This was in my Shopittomee this morning. I know that it's black lace and shorter than you wanted, but maybe it'll help with a different sleeve length? It does look more casual with short sleeves.

Thanks everyone so much. I will reconsider the nude lining so that the lace will show. I think that shorter length and shorter sleeves or sleeveless make it less dressy. That is a great idea.

Su- Lock yourself in a room and watch The Year Without A Santa Claus repeatedly until you feel comfortable in asking for the skirt. I think having the Heat Miser song stuck in your head would be worth it.
