I want to try being a redhead for awhile (I have always wanted to). My natural colour is dark blonde/very light brown. I need advice on shades - anything in the purple spectrum is going to look bad - that eggplant-y hue is a no-go but most red hair dyes I see (this will be a home job cuz it's only going to be for a little while) have that purple-ish tinge in them. I want the true red colour. Anyone with any tips please post 'em.

hey mia--if i remember right, your coloring is like mine (fair skin, maybe freckly?) and light eyes and hair? you are right that anything too red-red or purple is going to wash you out. maybe you should aim for somewhere around strawberry blonde, so it's not too intense for your coloring.
have you ever seen those artec wash-in colors at the beauty supply store? they have a red one that i am thinking you might like--it is definitely more potent than what you would think for a wash-in color and it lasts for a while. redken also makes a range, but they are more subtle--i've used the gold one and liked it, don't know about the red.
i have a picture i am thinking of to show you--be back in a little while.
I think you could try Clairol Natural Instincts. It's semi-permanent and I'm pretty sure they have a strawberry blonde color that would work on your hair. I think that they put corresponding colors to their permanent dyes on the box in case you want to go permanent after you try the semipermanet.
Lightest Auburn (in the summer) and Light Red (in the winter I go a little darker). It looks bright the first few days but red pigments don't hold onto hair well so it will fade. It is a permanent color though. (FYI in the States they call this brand Ultress)
It makes my naturally ash blonde/light brown hair like this: (taken this August)
Thanks for the tips - I think I will check out the shades mentioned and pick a semi-permanent just to see, at first. I am very pale skinned, no freckles, hazel/brown eyes and when I wore a red wig for Halloween a few years ago I got more compliments on my hair colour than anything else!
I'd like to try that Artec but I live nowhere near a place that would supply it. In fact a friend of mine just went through a whole eBay drama looking for the blonde...

hey! i just dyed my hair bright red the other day. it does have a bit of a purpleish tint & i am snow white fair & didn't wash me out. this is what i was going for - i came pretty close considering i did it myself. i say go for it! i have gotten so many compliments on it...probably because every girl here is bleached blonde. i used the loreal true reds line from sally beauty supply & really liked it.
sorry the pictures are kind of bad. i took some screen caps from a music video.
