tee hee, no, I don't think it's all that well-known, although the guy who started it is getting a decent amount of press coverage. There was something about it in the NYTimes a while back. It's just a satirical thing that he invented in response to the intelligent design movement--he wrote letters to the Kansas board of Ed. and other educational boards that are proposing the teaching of intelligent design in science classes, arguing that his beliefs that the universe was created by the Flying Spaghetti Monster should be taught in schools, as well. It's gotten a lot of attention because the whimsy appeals to a lot of people who don't agree with the teaching of intelligent design. The web site is here:

There is also some correlation to pirates, which he mentions in his letter, and how the lack of pirates is causing global warming... he loses me there, but I do like the fact that hard-core Pastafarians, as FSM supporters call themselves, dress up as pirates.
