Side bangs?
Permalink Closed

I'm bored with my hair and am considering getting a side bang.  I have past the shoulder, thicker, wavy (somewhat uncontrobable) hair.  And I'm pretty incompetent at styling it.  Any one have any idea just how much matainance is required for something like a side bang?

I'm also considering a side bang becasue I have a larger forehead (I call it a 5-head) and haven't been too happy with the way it looks lately in photos.  I hoping that a slight bang would soften my features.

Here's recent photo of me (with my cousin and my nephew)

This comes from someone who has straight hair, but I have bangs to cover my gray hair when they start to show in the front and to cover my large foreheadwinkas well. Since your hair is wavy you may have to straighten them daily. But if it is just the bangs it  should not take that  long. I say go for it b/c they always grow out fast if you dont like it.

Hi, Boots!

it's  nice to put a face on the name:) We have a similar hair texture, mine is longer, but I also have that same higt forehead problem. Always needed bangs. ( Mom used to call it "big brain"....hm....).

Anyway, looking at your picture I think you could do a shorter cut & side bangs: I have them now too. I used to have it all over the forehead(central) - wavy hair never sat well, parted in the middle - not as great with the "big brain", so...it parts now mid left eye & crosses the forehead...Also, low maitenence. I think you'd look chic with short cut! Happy Holidays!

5-head?! LOL! Awesome. I have one too.

I think we have similarly textured hair. I've had side bangs in the past, and I guess I probably have them right now - - except my hair is very short.

The main prob I have with my bangs is when they do this flippy thing:

flippybangs

It's not the end of the world, and it is pretty easy to correct. You just have to be sure to finger-style it when it's wet so it doesn't flip out.

The other issue is finding the right thickness for your bangs. Stylists always want to keep mine thin, but then I get stringy bangs with large gaps in them, and that just doesn't look right either. I understand that they don't want to make them too thick or else my bangs will start half-way back on the top of my head.

Despite the potential issues, I think side-bangs would work. For a special treat, check out the attached photo... (LOL, circa 1989-ish)

Thanks everyone!

I think that I'm going to try it!biggrin

I had short hair most of my 20's and started growing it out in my 30's. I'm not going extremely short (I also had that in my 20's and don't think that I have the face for it), but I definitely need to take off a few inches. Maybe just past my shoulders (it's too long at 3 inches under them right now.) And I'm going to talk to my stylist about a simple side bang since I agree that full bangs just won't work with my hair texture. I've been going to the same woman for at least 10 years now so I know that she'll do a good job.

Yesterday I was playing around with the Instyle website feature that lets you try different styles on a photo of yourself.  Let me just tell you, that if you need a good laugh, try it.  Not matter what, the results will make you look like some deranged drag queen.wink

Pollyjean- LOL! As somebody who graduated high school in 1990, I remember that look well!  We had girls in the yearbook who's hair didn't even entirely fit in the photo!  Ah, the 80's.

Ladies, your perm hair from 80-s was my envy! i used to live in Ukraine back then, so the hair was....styled Soviet way...no perm for girls this age! it's braids or pony tails or...flimzy...stuck in all directions/to foreheard...so, when i saw pictures in magazines - it thought it'd fit a beauty queen! I wished I'd had this style! With much envy!!!!.....yeah....no posting my pic..for obvious reasons....

Yes I think side bangs would look really good on you. I have naturally wavy hair and I've had either side bangs or bangs for the last probably 7 years. I find that I have to dry them as soon as I get out of the shower or they go crazy on me, but it's really not that time consuming. I just lightly run a straightening iron through them after that and they're good to go.

OK, got them last night and absolutely love them! So glad you all talked me into it. I needed to shake things up a little. My middle brother, who always gives me crap (like most younger brothers do regardless of how old you get) actually complimented me 2x last night on it!

My stylist took these photos so they aren't the best shots, but you get the idea.

Thanks everyone!

Kelly- My stylist told me to spray a little hairspray into my fingers and just smooth them to where I want them. It worked last night when she did it. I haven't tried it myself yet though.

Ack! I asked my question and then deleted it right away (not because I wasn't genuinely curious how to style side bangs, I am, but because I was afraid of threadjacking). Just want to make it clear to everyone that your'e not answering a question that was never asked! I'm just a trouble maker

I've tried both hairspray and gel and for some reason neither work for me. I have this chunk that refuses to lie anywhere except right between my eyes. I was hoping there was some other secret I didn't know about!

Super flattering! I'm partial to side-bangs myself, but have the worst luck in maintaining them. I usually cut them myself for the same reason...to soften my features...but then I get lazy and don't trim them or style them or whatever and pretty soon I'm in the 'well crap now I have these useless chunks of hair that aren't long enough to tuck away" funk that...yup...I'm sporting currently.
