So what are everyone's traditions for Thanksgiving? I love Thanksgiving. No presents, no unrealistic expectations, no holiday induced short tempers.
I run in an annual 5K Turkey Trot every Thanksgiving morning. Honestly, I look forward to this all year and it's almost embarressing how excited I am for it. It's just so nice to be outside doing something active and experiencing the holiday with other people who are also just happy to be there. It's hard to explain, but the air is filled good will and a complete lack of stress. The complimentary neck massage afterwards is pretty awesome too.
For the last few years my whole family has been going to my brother & SIL's house for dinner & football. They fry the turkey, so dinner preparation is a veiwing event as well. After dinner, my 2 SILs, my mom and I retreate to the back room and we go through all the sales adds together. And this year we have my baby nephew to play with, so everything will just be that much better.
What do you do? What are you looking forward to Thursday?
Thanksgiving has been a bit of a transient holiday in our circles. My grandparents/mother always used to host it. But, now that she's gotten into her 80s, my aunt has been doing it. My aunt isn't the Martha Stewart type, so my mom and I are putting it on this year at my mom's "new" house (used to be my dad's/the house I grew up in).
As for what my hubby and I do - lately we've been spending Tgiving with his dad, who invites he and his wife's friends and his wife's family. DH's husband is a wonderful cook who always makes something unique. Because the holiday is so short, DH and I rarely travel up to Ohio for it anymore. This will be our first Tgiving apart!
Our friends in Charlotte have been doing some fun things the past few years, namely holding "Friendgiving" and/or "Friendmas." I love these! As much as I love my family, incorporating friends into the what-used-to-be-strictly-family-holidays is a treat! It feels almost clandestine, and I like that. While everyone else is tip-toeing around Uncle Jerry's latest scandal, we're wooping it up with good friends, good food, and good drink.
Our tradition is to eat a lot! It's usually just my immediate family who gets together which is nice since we all live on our own now it's rare when we can get together as a family. Over the years we've added the boyfriends and my now husband but he is in Virginia so I can't be with him this Thanksgiving.
This year the guys are also going to fry the turkey so I think that will be our main attraction too while my mom is inside worrying and praying that they won't start a fire!
I saw this cute idea on pinterest where you write what you are thankful for in a little piece of paper and you stick in the biscuits before you put them in the oven. It will be kind of like opening up a fortune cookie! I think that's a cute idea and I'm going to try it.
We don't have very many Thanksgiving traditions, especially now that both sets of my grandparents have passed away and we're spread through-out the country. And it's funny, now that I'm actually thinking about it, we have zero Thanksgiving traditions. Not even a who pulls the wishbone or Dad carving the turkey. Nothing. But we still like to spend the time together, so I guess that's okay. It will be interesting this year being 3000 miles away this year. In years past, I haven't gone home even when I lived an hour away but not being able to go home is weird.

I've disliked this holiday for a long, long time. Over the last 15 years or so, we go to my in-laws, stay as long as necessary to look polite, and leave. Because they're Jewish, I always 'get' Christmas with my family and they 'get' Thanksgiving.
Since we've been vegan I've made a separate meal for DH and me, plus I make at least three different vegan desserts. I kill myself in the kitchen making two different kinds of pies, pumpkin for MIL, apple for FIL, sometimes homemade coconut milk ice cream, and something chocolate for SIL/BIL like a flourless chocolate cake or chocolate cheesecake. Then they eat dessert and give me backhanded compliments like "it's not bad...considering it's vegan. Is there any Cool Whip?"
Meanwhile my MIL won't even make a salad without cheese or a potato/vegetable dish without butter, so there's nothing else on the table for us besides whatever I bring.
It's been especially difficult when we spend the morning playing with rescued turkeys at the farmed animal sanctuary, then go to their house and see a dead bird on the table.
Last year we were brave and went to a friend's vegan potluck. I brought desserts to my in-laws as usual, then we left.
This year we have 40 recently retired beagles arriving from an animal testing laboratory in Spain the day before Thanksgiving. (It's legal, the lab was closing. We didn't steal them.) We're fostering about 10 for a few days. Our friend who runs the rescue is having people over on Thanksgiving and since we do PR we have a couple local TV stations who are coming to do a story on the rescue. So it will be us, a bunch of animal rescuers/activists, and a gaggle of beagles!
Here's a video of them at their temporary home in Spain last week after being released by the lab:
Now that I think about it, I don't know if we really have any Thanksgiving traditions in my family! There's always big parties for both my mom's side and my dad's side of the family, but other than that it changes every year. Sometimes we cook together, sometimes we bring things potluck-style. It's always at someone else's house. The only thing I think is really a constant every Thanksgiving is one person always makes the same style of potatoes (and turkey, of course!)
I guess you could say it's a tradition for everybody to get on my case about when I'm getting married/having babies.
Suasoria, I can't believe your in-laws are so inconsiderate about your vegan diet! I mean, it is not that hard to separate stuff out before you pour the cheese/butter on top. Jerks.

Just my husband, my father and his girlfriend and myself. Casual traditional fare (most of which I will not be eating - the mashed potatoes will be made with me in mind, but I may have a little taste of a couple of dishes that have dairy.) Along with consumption of alcohol and watching the Lions :)

This year will be my 1st year hosting. LAst year was the first time we spent thanksgiving at home by ourselves ( my husband, I & our 2 little ones), so...we had the basics ( have to find a way the kids would eat), were proud of ourselves for starting this fmaily tradition, although it felt very lonely. This year we'll host for the 1st time (we live in USA for 10 years now). So...hopefully it'd go well, no burnt or dry food, no broken things ( kids in the house):).
To all of you, have a wonderful & deliscious holiday!
