hiring a designer

i have an appointment next week with an interior designer at our design center... i'm using the Designer-on-Call program, which is basically a free one-hour consultation. my project is selecting tile for a backsplash in our kitchen. i already know which showroom i want my tile from (Ann Sacks), have narrowed it down to two styles of tile (one glass and one ceramic) and we have decided that we want 1" x 6" skinny, long tiles. i have taken photographs of our space, gathered my countertop sample, paint sample and window shade and fabric samples (which are already in place)

thing is... i really don't need a designer (obviously — i already have everything chosen), i need access to the showroom at the design center and the only way to them is through a designer. my goal is to use my hour to decide on which of the two styles i want (glass or ceramic) and choose a color palette.

has anyone ever used an interior designer or a designer-on-call program? i am wondering if my goals for that one hour our too lofty. having never done this before, i'm not exactly sure what to expect. if anyone has any experiences they'd like to share or suggestions on what types of questions i should ask or other materials i should bring i welcome them.

thanks. (sorry, that was kind of long)

A friend of mine recently employed an interior designer for a few hours to help him with paint colors, tile choices, etc, for his new house. The previous people liked white, white, white. She brought tons of samples, and helped him decide and compiled all the decisions in a folder. He thinks it was well worth it because it basically motivated him to make a decision, any decision. I think as soon as you see the tile in the showroom setting you will know what you want.
