As I've moved to Portland, Oregon recently and it's been raining for a week or so now (off and on, not constantly!), I think I finally just need to come to terms with the weather and buy a rain coat.

Here are my specifications: I want it to be longer than waist/hip length. I would also like if it had some sort of removable inner liner for warmth. I don't need a winter coat as I already have several of those and as it doesn't snow here or get terribly cold. The daily average in winter is high thirties to low forties (and even higher).

So, here's what I picked out, but it would be in black. And sorry for the stupid back shot but that's all the website will allow me to copy/paste.

The problem? My boyfriend says it looks like something a grandma or a soccer mom would wear. I was really excited about the jacket, but now he has me doubting myself. Can you all either reassure me that it's not hideous or provide me with other suggestions?

I don't actually see anything wrong with the coat you picked out.  Especially in black, which sleeks it up a bit. I mean, yeah, it's not exactly sexy or "fun" but it'll keep you warm and dry. Plus, from what I know of Portland fashion (I believe it's the Fleece Capital of the World, or so my cousin who lives there tells me...) you'll fit right in with the practicality of that coat.

You could do a trench coat if you want something chicer. But finding one with a removable liner is difficult. And I'm not sure if a hood is important to you.

Should have added that yes, a hood is definitely a must because my whole goal with getting a rain coat is being able to never have to use an umbrella as I despise them.

And man, yes, the fashion sense of Portland so far is well, stunning. There are only two types of fashion that I can tell so far:

1. Fleece and more fleece.

2. Urban Outfitters/American Apparel hipsters.

Honestly, I don't recall ever seeing hooded raincoats that are super fashionable. It's just one of those things that you've just got to break down and buy and realize that you might look like a soccer mom. That said, I like the coat you chose and think that it is less soccer mom-ish than others out there!

I just bought a Michael Kors trench coat that has a removable hood. It is made of a slick nylon and would work as a raincoat. Only thing is that there's no removable section, but you can always layer a sweater or cardi under. I think a lot of coats with removable liners are matronly.

London Fog coats/jackets frequently have removable liners. I have two (in L.A., I know; why?). One I bought at the Broadway in college and it's still perfect but my mom absconded with it, one I paid good $ for in a vintage store and with the pile lining it's the warmest coat I have.

I really feel for you- I basically gave up on finding an everyday longer length (im hippy) hooded raincoat I could "love"-  i dont see anything wrong with your original choice either- most of the ones i came across in my search are quite similar (ll bean/rei/lands end/etc)- I think the fit is what will ultimately determine if it is matronly or not

a few "non-traditional" choices 

100% cotton  (use waterproof spray maybe?) no lining though

100% cotton w/ cotton lining

Well, I went ahead and ordered the Eddie Bauer one. It should be here by the end of this week. I really super hope it helps, it's rained every day for the last two weeks. It hasn't rained hard enough yet that I would want an umbrella but it appears that yep, it's going to be wet and cloudy for the next six months.

I'll let you all know how the fit is, I have really high hopes that it's at least somewhat stylish.
