How often do you clean out your closet?

YUCK - I did this ALL DAY TODAY & I'm still not done. I would say this is my 3rd time this year, but I am super serious this time. I took out 3 garbage bags of clothes today - from hangers.

probably twice a year. i cleaned it out big time over the summer. mainly what happens is when i switch out stuff (oh the joy of a small closet) each spring/fall i take out all the stuff i haven't worn and either ebay it or get rid of it.

This is sooo funny, I am getting started on this tonight!! And putting it off by being here!
I did it about 6 months ago and I guess I wasn't ruthless enough cause it is horrible in there. I am afraid. I am going to toss everything I didn't wear this year. I promise....

I am a thrift store shopper so I sometimes bring home stuff that I think I will wear someday. That stuff is reaalllllly piling up.

Our closet is a walk in with a bar on each side. My SO says my stuff in encroaching on his side. It is. I sometimes use his bar because it isn't full!! Waste of space!

I will go through everything when I don't have room to bring more stuff home from shopping! This is probably 4 times a year. The stuff that can fetch some money on ebay gets listed, otherwise it's to Goodwill.

For the past five years I cleaned out my closet every time I moved, which was once every summer (I was in college). Hopefully I won't move for a long time now, so I will have to start a new system of cleaning out my closet.

I'll do a big purge about twice a year, but I'm always adding to my closet and taking things out as well. If something just isn't working for me anymore, I'll just take it out and put it in my e-bay or Goodwill pile.

I heard of a cool idea recently that I'm starting to do. However you have your hangers facing normally, turn them the opposite way. Whenever you wear something, flip the hanger back around so it's hanging normally from your rod. At the end of a year, pitch the clothes that are still on the backwards facing hanger. Basically it's an easy way to keep track of which items you have or haven't worn in a year. Pretty cool idea. I'm already starting to notice that I have several "go-to" tops that I rely on heavily and a bunch of tops that I don't wear very often at all.

This is a GREAT idea - I'm going to do this today when I finish up my closet. What a great way to tell if you wear something or not!

My main reason for cleaning out my closet is to make room for new clothes!! I do it several times a year. I have pretty good mental inventory of my closet, so I know what I don't wear that often.

I definitely use the "one year rule" when deciding what to give to charity. Anything that I like but hardly wear because of fit issues is the first to go!

I do it about twice a year - once when I do the tranisition to cool weather, and again when we transition back to warmer weather. I actually purged nearly the entirety of my winter wardrobe when we moved this past summer - gone are all the oversized, completely synthetic sweaters, but now I have nothing to wear

I usually clean out my closet twice a year. Once when I pack away then winter clothes and again when I pack away the summer clothes. I find if I go through things at the end of a season I can pretty much tell what I still wear and what I don't wear anymore.

my husband has a little "rule" i try to stick to, every time i buy something, i have to get rid of two things. so i rid pretty frequently, but only take the stuff to goodwill maybe 3-4x per year. (i just took 6 bags of clothes!) i wish i could be someone who has a small, but elegant wardrobe with just basics.
