So, I want/need to buy a new coat this year. I already have a nice "special occasions" coat and a big puffy "playing in the snow" coat, so I want to buy one that's really just something I'm going to wear day to day, out at night, etc. because my old everyday coat is getting kind of worn down.
I'm trying to decide between an aviator style and a cape style.
(not those specifically, but they're just examples)
For those of you who have had winter capes in the past - how warm are they? Of course a lot of that depends on the material/lining, but just in general I'm trying to decide if a coat that's so loose away from my body, and open at the bottom, would be totally ineffective at keeping heat trapped.

I've never owned a cape so I can't say how warm they are. They strike me as inconvenient to wear as an everyday coat. Too much material would just get in my way, personally.
I like the aviator jacket (but my go to Fall & Spring coat is my leather jacket so I'm biased.) And I don't see it as going out of style quickly. Not sure if I can say the same for capes. I just wonder if they'll look dated next year?
I think capes are something that always come back around. Right now they are trendy, but they have always seemed to have an air of sophistication to me when styled well. A camel or black one can be classic IMO, if it doesnt have too many trendy details. To me they are best layered for warmth, for example an l/s tissue tee under a fine gauge sweater underneath. Or a cashmere turtle neck, with a silk cami as the base layer. I certainly see it as more stylish than utilitarian function...
I was walking on campus today, and I was behind a student wearing a cape. It looked very pretty! She wasn't particularly dressed up or anything (skinny jeans and brown knee-high boots), but she looked so polished. She stood out from the rest of the students who were wearing hoodies and pyjamas!
