Help! Really bad fridge smell in new house
Permalink Closed

Hi all - We just moved in to our new home, which we are renting in the Boston area (if anyone is around and wants to meet up, pls let me know).  Unfortunately the house has a number of problems, the most important of which is that the refrigerator reeks!  The landlord paid for a repairman to come and check it out today and when he was here, the smell wasn't as bad.  He said it just smelled like a certain type of ethnic food (sorry if I'm offending anyone).  He took apart the fridge and checked for a dead mouse but found nothing.  There was a pink-ish stain on the bottom of the freezer that he said could have been blood from red meat, and we cleaned that.  Now, two hours after he left, the smell is back.

I know this sounds petty but I really can't deal with it.  It grosses me out to the point that I dread opening the fridge, cooking, preparing food for my kids, etc.  I caught myself not wanting to offer the kids a snack due to the dread of opening the fridge.  What should I do?  I priced similar fridges on craigslist, thinking that we would just pay for it ourselves but it's stainless steel and similar ones are $1,100.

Ironically, one of the reasons I picked this house to rent was b/c the appliances were updated and as such didn't gross me out.

Has anyone had a similar problem?  I have baking soda in there now but it's not helping.  The repairman said to get expired coffee grounds at Starbucks and put it in to absorb the odor.  I am going to do that this evening or tomorrow but I'm not confident it will work.  Please help!!

I've heard coffee grounds too.

But, recently I heard a talk (for the life of me I can't remember the context of the discussion) about FEET odor absorbers having a scientific property that works much better than baking soda or coffee grounds.

The speaker suggested putting them in the fridge works much better than anything else - as strange as that sounds.

Oddly enough, now I think it might have been a show on Foodtv......

This sounds promising.  Check out the reviews.

Gossipgirl and Domino - thank you so much! These are just the sort of tips I'm looking for. They both sound great and I will probably get both of them! At this point, I'm desparate. I do think that the smell is starting to dissipate slightly. I pored a ton of baking soda out on a plate instead of just putting an opened up box in the fridge (which is what it says to do on the box), and it seems to have made a difference. I may try the coffee grounds in the meantime while I'm waiting for these other products to ship. Thanks again for you help! Keep the advice coming!

Hmm, can't find the feet brand odor absorber. The name is too generic for google. Gossipgirl - do you have a website by any chance? Thanks!

I can see where you might have thought that was a brand, but I don't think it is. I think she was saying any foot "odor absorber" would work.

I would go to the grocery store and look for "odor absorbers" in the cleaning products aisle.  My other recommendation is to wash the inside of the fridge with bleach.

Also, you mentioned it didn't smell earlier in the day, but did later.  It could be something stuck in the coils behind the fridge that smells when it gets heated in a coil (the refrigerator doesn't constantly run, it cycles on and off - maybe when it heats up during a cycle it's exacerbating the smell?)

I second this.

...or if something could be getting rewetted (word?) somehow

Hi everyone - just wanted to give a quick update. The smell is GONE. My quality of life has greatly improved. The baking soda, once it was spread out on a plate, truly made a difference and absorbed the smell. Yippee! For what it's worth, I did put coffee grounds in the fridge but that did not seem to do anything other than make the fridge smell like coffee. I think most of the smell was gone by then anyway. For major odors I can see how it would work though.

D, thanks for clearing up my misunderstanding. Duh! I need more sleep!
