I don't really know anything about this either, but what else have you done besides jewelry and graphics design? If jewelry and graphic design are the things that you want to pursue, then why not just include that stuff (and the required 3 pix)? I would put in things that I got some kind of recognition for, things that I put alot of time into, or things that just *look* like I put a lot of time into. Of course they want originality and I am SURE that your stuff is original. Do you have a limit?

That is so exciting, going back to school. Agreed, it seems to be the right thing to do.

Thanks, AJ and calichic. They want a broad range of items, which isn't a problem, but I'm just not sure what all to include. I want to focus on graphic and jewelry design, but I want to show them that I can also draw and paint and work with pastels and charcoal, etc. I'm not sure which school I'm going to go to either...there are three possibilities and I can send the same portfolio for each. I plan to start in the fall, so that leaves a decent amount of time but

hey hon! so glad you're pursuing this, it really sounds like a good fit for your talents! And you've got exactly the right idea as far as your portfolio goes: aside from your jewelry, which obviously you should include photos of, a broad range of drawing and painting work is really what they are looking for. Especially since you're looking at BFAs, they won't expect you to have the specific skills related to the programs you are applying for, so what they are most interested in is your general artistic and graphic skills: your use of color, sense of composition, creativity, and of course your drawing ability. Any examples you have of finished jewelry and graphics work are a fantastic bonus.

Like how to present your work? Just what kind of work? etc.?

My boss has her package designs, her favorite advertisements, stationary pieces glued to foam core boards for presenation.

I might be too late for this thread, but I am planning to go to art school as well. I think it is important to include some of whatever you consider your signature style to make it unique, but I think you really need to incorporate a variety of different and contrasting styles to show your adaptability. (IE something like cubism vs. realism.) For specific pieces, painting folk art with acrylic or oil, and building up texture around something flat has really caught my interest lately.

well said. focus on including pieces that demonstrate your overall skills related to the basics: color, composition, craft, concept, creativity etc.
