As you might be able to tell from my posts, I am trying to switch jobs, and am trying to figure out what I would like to do that would not require me to take a huge pay cut. I feel like life is passing me by at my current job.
I am thinking of taking out a small business loan & starting up a dog walking/pet sitting/pet services company. I have looked into this before & I think it could really be successful, it would just require some initial work & money to get everything set up & then from there it would be up to me to get the customers.
I just don't know if it would be worth it to go into debt over. I would have to quit my job because there's no way I could do both, not even part time, I just don't think it would be successful unless I could really dedicate myself to it. But I would be doing something I would really enjoy, I love animals, I would be close to home & wouldn't have to deal with an hour commute everyday & my time would be my own.
I guess I'm just hoping to get some opinions, maybe from people who have taken a leap of faith & taken a risk, or if anyone else is thinking of doing something similar (not with pets, but just in general).
If you live in an area where people have lots of pets, go for it! I had a friedns who left her "real" job to work for herself as a conceirge- she basically just ran errands for people (walked dogs, picked up dry cleaning, went grocery shooping) and she loved it! She made decent money (not rolling in cash, but she supported herself comfortably), made her own hours, and worked waaay less than 40 hours a week. The one thing she saud she did miss after a while was having coworkers and people to see every day, so she started working part time at Trader Joe's for fun.
Ok - how much debt are we talking? Not that I'm asking for an exact figure, but I'd think it's not TOO much. Have you done a REALISTIC business plan? Thought about all expenses, etc? Worst case scenario?
I used to loan money to small businesses & came across a lot of start ups - I think the biggest mistake people make is not thinking through absolutely everything. I think if you have thought it through, figure out how long it will take for you to pay back that debt - do some projections, I looked at them in a good case, worst case, and break even - that way you can see if it is really workable.
I think it's a great idea & I'm a big proponent of following your dream.
PM me if you want some help - I could maybe point you in the right direction to put together a business plan. I don't have any of my old stuff, but maybe we could find something online....
