Although I am extremely interested in the position and I would love the opportunity to become a part of your team I know that if I am meant to have this position you will hire me.

"Disappointed.  For both our sakes as I feel I'm especially qualified for this position because of my experience in ___ and my interest in ___.  Nevertheless, I understand and respect that the decision is in your hands.  The interview process can be a trying one for both parties involved so I wish you luck and success in your endeavor.  Thank you for taking the time to consider me."

I'd probably loosen it up a little in person but there's the gist.  What a sadistic question by the way.

I would say exactly what Farrah posted, but I would change a few things. Here is what I would say, "I am extremely interested in the position and believe I would be an invaluable assest to your ______ (company, organization...). However, I understand you will no doubt be interviewing many qualified candidates. I trust in you to make the right decision and am greatful for the opportunity you provided me by meeting with you today." I haven't been interviewed by too many places because I am still in college. However, I did interview recently for a job I had absolutely no experience for and was offered the position. The interviewer told me (because I sounded so gosh darn surprised!) that is was my confidence in myself and what I had to offer that sealed the deal. She said though I lacked experience, I had the personality of a go-getter and someone who would try her best to do the job right. I hope this helps!

that is a really bizarre question.  what do you think they were hoping to get by asking it?

Potential Boss: "How would you feel if we didn't Hire you?"

Me: "I would think you're a huge jerk and tape your face to my dartboard."

This is why I don't belong in corporate america. I can't play along with these fools.

well, in reading your other post, now i think i understand it.  if it's for an internal position, they probably just want to know that you can cope if the job ends up going to someone else--ie. that you are not going to be mopey and unmotivated if you end up staying in your current position.
